The subscription site Roots Ireland has the July 24 1837 baptismal record for John Griffin in St. Michael's parish Limerick city. Father was Michael Griffin mother was Mary McMahon. There are no siblings for John with either Mary or Margaret McMahon as the mother's name. NOTE: I searched for all of Ireland not just Co. Limerick.

Have you considered DNA testing? You might get some matches on your Griffin/McMahon line.

  • Roger, Yes, I have doen the dna testing, this is where I found the surname" McMahon" , but McMahon links to John Griffin who I thought to be brother of my 2nd gr grandmother Ellen Griffin b- Ireland 1835-1838.

On 1 census it list her parents b- Irish Free State ? what does that mean. " Irish Free States" ?  Thank you, Dotty R.

After the Treaty between Ireland and England was signed in December 1921, the new government for Ireland was called the Irish Free State. See link for a lot more background.
