I am trying to crack a major brick wall in my family tree, and find some more information regarding my Gx3 grandfather, George Kennedy, who was an attorney in Offaly and Dublin in the early 19th century. I know that he married a Hannah Banco, and that they had a child- Pemberton- together, and that he dedicated a memorial to her- supposedly in Reynagh...
You'd think that this would be more than enough to track him down, but the trail runs cold... I know about the prominence of the local Banco family, and where Hannah fits in, but I have been struggling with George now for over 2 years... There are no records for him in King's Inn in Dublin, and yet between the 1820's and 1840's he was holding down a successful practice in Birr and Dublin, according to the Directories... Does anyone have some local inside knowledge?
Sincerely-
Dr David Caldicott

Hello David.
I have an ancestor, Hannah Banco who married a Kennedy . Hannah was baptised at Birr in 1775 and died 1797. Her brother Thomas was an Excise Officer and another brother, John was a watchmaker, Main St. Birr. in 1821. It is likely that we have these ancestors 'in common'. I don't have anything further on the Kennedy family unfortunately. I think the Banco/Banko family at Birr were buried in the Protestant church yard at Birr. (Derelict now.) The family origins are at Eyrecourt. Best of luck in your quest.

Hello,
I'd suggest you post on the link below (the Eyrecourt-Meelick-Clonfert parish in east Galway bordering on Reynagh) and local historian, Christy Cunniffe, will pick it up - if anyone know the local family genealogies, it's Christy:

Many thanks to you all for all of the above!
@ Roisin-
The reported inscription on Hannahs MI reads:
"This monument is designed to perpetuate the memory of Hannah Kennedy otherwise Banko, being a tribute of affection paid to her virtues by her affectionate husband George Kennedy of the City of Dublin Homes of Law. She died 5 December 1797 in the 22nd year of her age. Eminently possessing those virtues which rendered her endearing. She was a fond mother, a tender and affectionate wife and an amiable friend. Universally esteemed in life as she is now in death by all her acquaintances. For Hannah, gone where all would wish to go"
Clearly she was very loved when she passed away...
It is supposedly referenced to "St Rynaght's Church Graveyard, Banagher, Ireland." Are there any records for that graveyard?
@Dolores-
Many thanks for the tip! Done!
@SeanMacD
That tallies with our records- would you mind if I asked what your source was, and if there was any indication where he might have been buried?
@Rosin
Many thanks! This was a vital link from Frederick Bolton to George, and indeed what led us to George in the first place! Michael Byrne's tremendous academic work 'Legal Offaly' have also given us fragments of his mid-life, but It's his early life and origins that are so utterly elusive!
Many thanks again to all!
David

David,
IrelandXO are hoping to do a transcription of the graveyard headstones during 2013 but I believe that the Midlands Ancestry Centre have most transcriptions already and you can purchase one for approx. ?7.
