Walter Stewart of Enniskillen, in his will drawn up in 1815, refers to his house in the Commons.

Where in the Enniskillen area might this area be located?

Thanks in advance for any assistance

  • There is a townland in Fermanagh called Commons:

  • There's also "The Commons" in Bellanaleck near Enniskillen, which is probably the one you are looking for...

  • I located a reference to a 'Commons Hill' on the outskirts of Enniskillen which could fit with that Will reference - the details come from an entry on the Fermanagh-Omagh District Council listing for a landmark called Cole's Monument in Forthill park located on the eastern outskirts on the town of Enniskillen, see extract and link below :

"......Forthill Park takes its name from a 1689 star fort located on the site. The Forthill Promenade and Pleasure Park has always been a space for public use.

After the Plantation, Forthill Park was called “Commons Hill” or “Cow Hill,” where Enniskilleners could graze their cattle and animals. It was also known as Camomile Hill, where in 1689, the Governor of Enniskillen, Gustavus Hamilton, ordered a fort of sods to be raised in Enniskillen; hence the name ‘Forthill’.

In 1836 the area was enclosed, planted with trees, and transformed into a promenade and pleasure ground....."

The early Ordnance Survey maps dated c1840 show several houses around the south eastern edge of the area, also a School house and one named as Sally Park. Many towns had a area of common land nearby where grazing was permitted for animals.

Thank you for your helpful replies.

Having looked at the three locations, I reckon that the Coles Monument vicinity is a good bet.

I would expect the Commons would be within easy reach of Enniskillen town centre.

    Best regards
