By DNA match, I have a 3rd to 5th cousin, currently in Ireland, by the name of Bernie O'Sullivan.  I have found her parents, her grandparents and her 2gg where I believe the connection lays.  The 2g grandparents are Daniel Sullivan (1873-1921) and Bridget Brennan (1886-1959).  They were married 29 Nov 1902 in Caherciveen, Kerry, Ireland and witnessed by Denis Sullivan and Ellie Brennan.  Bridget's parents were Michael Brennan (1859-?) and Mary Sullivan (1864-?).  They were married on 16 Feb 1878 in Killemlagh, Kerry.  They are present in 1901 census in Glanlough Lower (Castlecove) with their children: Bridget; Patrick and James.  So the thing is how is Michael related to me?  My 2gg was Cornelius Brennan, born in 1832, so Michael is probably an offshoot of one of Cornelius brothers?  This is the first time I have found a crack in my brick wall, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have a baptismal record for Cornelius Brennan in 1832? If you don't have that record, it will be difficult to establish a connection to Michael Brennan, We do know from the 1878 civil marriage record for Michael and Mary that Michael's father was James. Also, Michael and Mary indicated they were full age in 1878 which was 21. Unless they were stretching the truth likely they were born 1857 or earlier. See third record at the link.

Baptismal records for the parish of Sneem (where the marriage occurred) start in 1845.

  • I don't have or can find a baptismal record for Cornelius Brennnan in 1832.  I can't find anything concerning him.  I do not know his parents nor his siblings.  The fact that Michael is related to Bernie O'Sullivan, she is related to me, I was hoping it would help me crack the brick wall.  I am making an assumption that Michael could be the son of a sibling of Cornelius'.  Michael's father, James, could be a sibling of Cornelius'.  Now I need to find out more info on James and his parents/siblings.  Sounds so easy but I know it isn't.

  • brennan- Sneem area.pdf    This is a letter I received from a James Brennan, just outside of Sneem.  I am curious if this could be a descendent of the James Brennan, father of Michael Brennan, that is related to me.  I received this back in 2017 and placed it in my records and forgot about it.  Can someone help me with this?  Michael Brennan was married to Mary Sullivan and their daughter, Bridget married Daniel O'Sullivan so there might be some relation there.  Thanks!

  • If my research is correct, I have James Brennan and Catherine Moriarty as the parents of Michael Brennan.  I have Daniel Sullivan and Honora Nora Fitzgerald as the parents of Mary Sullivan.  I found James Brennan and Catherine Moriarty were married on 17 Feb 1857 in Kenmare, County Kerry.  In doing some more research,  I found James Brennan and Ellen Sullivan living in Cumnkilla in Kenmare Parish.  They had a son, James, who was baptisted on 6 Jan 1819 and witnessed by James Shea and Hanora Neil.  I found this at Catholic Parish Register at NLI, Templenoe, microfilm 04289/01.  Is there a way to verify if this is the right James?  I do not have a death date for James, father of Michael, but his wife, Catherine Moriarity, died 19 Aug 1919 in Capparoe, Dromore, County Kerry.
