I'm trying to find the birth record for an ancestor who married in Argyll, Scotland in 1872. We know she was born in Island Magee sometime between 1845 and 1849 (depending whether you trust census or marriage certificate) but I can't find any records online to get me any further - where would I start to look?

Her maiden name was Janet McMurtrie (possibly McMurtry).

Thanks for any pointers you can give.

  • I had a look at the 1901 Irish census for Islandmagee. The McMurtrie/y families there then were either Presbyterian or Non Subscribing Presbyterian (aka Unitarian).

Islandmagee 1st Presbyterian has records from 1829 onwards; the 2nd Congregation has records from 1854 onwards. The nearest Non Subscribing church appears to be in Larne. They have records from 1720 onwards (with gaps). I don’t think any of these records are on-line anywhere. However there are copies of all of them in PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast. A personal visit is required to view them.
