My great-grandmother was Mary J. (O'Connor) Kearney, daughter of James O'Connor/Connors & Mary Sullivan (m. 1866?). She was born in 1880 in Shanaknock & baptized at Ballymacelligott. Mary went back to Ireland often to visit family, until her husband died in 1962. She had left Ireland for the U.S. about 1901, & died there near Boston in 1966.

Her father James (b. ca. 1840) was still living in Shanaknock for the 1901 census. James' other children, that I know of:

  • Ellen, b. 1867, m. Patrick Sugrue in 1898, he died & she re-married in 1901 (husband unknown)
  • Honora, b. 1870
  • John, b. 1872, owned stores in Boston in the U.S. ca. 1908, returned to Ireland ca. 1909, did return to Boston again, but I don't think he stayed
  • James, b. 1875, m. Bessie Hassey ca. 1900, they were in Shanaknock for 1901 & 1911 census
  • Maurice, b. 1877, lived in the U.S. (Chicago & Boston) ca. 1912, don't know if he stayed

One of James & Mary's sons married a Kearney from Kilmurry, a sister to my Mary (O'Connor) Kearney's husband James.  I know nothing of the origin of James O'Connor & Mary Sullivan.

  • Hi- Thank you for your message.

I have forwarded your query to a volunteer who may be able to offer some advice.

Remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.

    Kind regards,

  • You might try the local priest Fr. Pat Crean-Lynch

    http://www.dioceseofkerry.ie/parish.php?parish=Ballymacelligott&sec=priests

Some of the priests are very open to reuniting families, others not. He may not have been in the parish in 1962 but he may know your family or someone who does.

Do let us know how you get on.
