Jeremiah Sweeney was married to Hanna Lucey. They are my grandfather's (Bartholomew Sweeney (1890 - 1967), grandparents. Jeremiah and Hanna's children were Michael Sweeney ( 1865 - 1916), John Sweeney (1848 - 1908) and (as far as I know), Elizabeth Sweeney.
The family lived in Glenogue, Cork. John Sweeney is buried in Abbey's Well Cemetery though there is no headstone. He is my grandfather's father. John married Ellen Riordan (1855 - 1902). That is all I know about John and Ellen. My grandfather Bartholomew most likely worshipped at Saint Columba's Church in Bweeng before he immigrated to Brooklyn, New York in 1910. Then he stayed with his aunt, Elizabeth Sweeney (now) Clark who was possibly born in 1860. I can not find when (or whom) Elizabeth married. I can not find when she immigrated. Michael Sweeney I have been able to trace when he came to America in 1882 and settled also in Brooklyn, New York. Eventually, Michael added Mc to his last name as did my grandfather.
Most important to me is confirmation of Jeremiah and Hanna's children, John, Elizabeth and Michael. Were there more children? If I have this information correct, it will help me research the family tree in America. Of course, any and all information is so greatly appreciated as there are many gaps, particularly in dates. I have visited Saint Columba's Graveyard in Bweeng. Where is Abbey's Well Cemetery?
Thanks again for this wonderful resource. I may never have all my ancestry answers but I also never stop having questions.
Sincerely, -Kathleen Logue Crofton, Maryland USA

Kathleen:
Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
I located a number of records but I'm having difficulties finding any records for Jeremiah Sweeney and Hanna Lucey. I'm wondering if they were one generation further back. It appears to me that the grandfather of Bartholomew was actually John and his wife was Julia Regan or Ryan. I located the civil marriage record for John Sweeney (from Glenouge) and Ellen Riordan and that record lists John's father as John. I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland for Sweeney children baptismal records where the father was Jeremiah and the mother had a surname of Lucey and got no record.
The family lived in Kilshannig civil parish and the RC parish should be Glountane/Glantane. I did find an Elizabeth Sweeney baptismal record in that parish with parents John Sweeney and Jude Ryan. Also found a record for a John in 1847, parents John Sweeney and Julia Regan. Did not find a reocrd for Michael. I also found a possible baptismal record for Ellen Riordan. I also listed below the 1901 census for the family and for some reason Ellen was shown as as Eliza. I also located the 1905 death record for Ellen and the 1917 death record for John Sweeney.
Let me know what questions you have.
By the way, I live about an hour north of you.

Dear Roger,
Thank you for your response. You seem to be the "go to" person when I have posted a question on different branches of my family tree. From Armagh to Cork, you are the man with the answers.
I will take your answers and get in touch with cousins in Cork to verify names and dates. I can already see that I may have added a relative who isn't related at all but just simply had the same name.
I am certain of this much because I have his death certificate...Michael Sweeney (1865 - 1916) was married to Katherine Sweeney in Brooklyn in 1888. His parents were Jeremiaah Sweeney and Hanna Lucey. That is all fact. It was a leap of faith on my part that Michael's siblings were Elizabeth and John, who was my great grandfather. As I mentioned previously, Michael added Mc to his last name and I have all sorts of records to prove that. From what you told me, that leap of faith on my part was a very big leap and probably wrong.
This all stems from my desire to prove how I am related to Michael and his wife Katherine. I had posted an inquiry concerning Katherine previously but even with your help, I couldn't quite make the connection. I thought that I might have better luck with an inquiry about Michael. Coming in through the back door you might say.
Thanks again. Much food for thought...and my plate is quite full. -Kathleen Logue
