Hi everyone,

I am trying to research my 3rd great grandfather Martin Francis O’Brien born in 1820 in Tipperary. The little I know of Martin before he left Ireland is he married a Mary McGrath in Youghal Arra in February 1844. I believe his fathers name was John but I am unsure of his mother’s name or if he had any siblings.

Martin was 58 when he died, on the 20th of November 1878 in Happy Valley, Victoria, Australia.

Any information would be greatly appreciated

  • Dear Javk:

Thank you for your post to Ireland Reaching Out.  I have done some previous research on some of the O'Briens in this area.  Unfortunately, Youghalarra parish registers only go back to 1828.  However, I did take a look at the digitised scan of the marriage entry and it appears that all the parties (bride, groom, and witnesses) were from Youghalarra.  This might indicate that they were neighbours. I also noted that the townland of Youghal was mentioned.  This may be a good clue for you to look at further for any O'Brien/Brien surnames.

The Tithe Applotment Books may also be helpful as they were created earlier (1823-1837) and there are 3 entries  for a John Brien in Youghalarra parish.  Thogicae townlands listed are:  Carhubawn, Gaughal and Ballymodan.  It may be worth looking at these townlands more closely.

I will pass on this query to several Tipperary volunteers who may be able to shed further light.  You might also take a look at the Tipperary Studies website which has a lot of very good genealogical information contained in it.  The link is:  http://tipperarystudies.ie/

The Tithe Applotment Books are here:  http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/index.jsp

If you need any further assistance, please let us know.

    Kind regards,

    Jane

  • Hi JavK,

We are related. I've contacted you before about the O'Brien family. Martin was my 2nd great grandfather. Martin was 78 when he passed. The family has been traced to Youghalarra Ireland. My Dad an O'Brien paid for the info in regards to this and shows kids baptisms etc.

    Kind regards
