Felix O'Neil + Penelope Sullivan, 1848

Hi Tom,

The Witnesses to the marriage of Felix O'Neill and Penelope Sullivan were Michael O'Neill and Mary McDonagh. No addresses.

There is a record of a Felix O'Neill born to Felix O'Neill and Margaret Connors in Loughrea, which would be 40 miles East of Oughterard.

His baptism is recorded for the 19th September, 1823.

Penelope Sullivan was possibly from the Glann area of Oughterard where there were a number of families named McDonagh.

Oughterard had a military barracks, so many young men would have been stationed there for short periods.

Thank you, that's most helpful! The Felix O'Neill record from Loughrea seems more likely than the more distant one I found in Clonoe, Co. Tyrone. That gives me a new area to search, as well as a focus on the Glann area of Oughterard.

Regarding previous message, a check of the Kilcummin baptism records show a Thomas Michael Sullivan baptised in Kilcummin on October 4th 1828. Parents: Peter Sullivan and Penelope Cook. Sponsors: Michael McDonough and Judith Cook. No addresses. There are no records between 1821 and 1828, so there could be other children born in those years. 

To complicate things, there are two "Peter Sullivan's" for this period. One has a son  "Peter"  in 1829 whose mother is shown as Margaret. No address.

Petty Sessions for 1854 records a Peter Sullivan, but only gives the address: Outerard. He was possibly living in,the town, but which "Peter"?

In regard to the name "Bernard", a Bernard Sullivan was charged with illegal fishing in August in 1866. He was find £4. One of the witnesses was a "Peter Sullivan". A Morgan and Peter Sullivan wre recorded in Curraghaduff (Glann) in 1856.

In relation to Mary McDonagh: a "Mary McDonagh" was baptised in Kilcummin on December 8th 1820. Father: Miles and Mother: Mary Gildea. Address: Lemonfield Gate. Miles McDonagh may have been a gatekeeper for the O'Flaherty's of Lemonfield House?

You have not indicated when Penelope Sullivan emigrated to the US. Many people in the Oughterard area would be travelling at the same time., usually from Galway.

In relation to the name "Cook". A "Judith Cook" was baptised in Cappataggle (Loughrea area) on September 6th 1819. Father: John Cook - Mother: Margaret Donnelly. It is a long shot!
