I have a US document for John Howe which says he was born in aboaut 1838 in Ferimah, Cork.  The document also says John Howe is illerate, so the spelling of the town or townland or possibly parish is the spelling of a New York official.  This is the one small scrap of information I have that might lead me to a location.  John Howe (per this poor house census) says he arrived in America in 1853. Can anyone help me figure out this place name?

John Howe also has relations (brothers? cousins?) named Bartholomew Howe (b 1815) and William Howe (b 1825).  The father of these brothers, Barthlomew and William Howe, is named William Howe.

  • Hi,

This woul appear to be an incorrect spelling of the town of "Fermoy" in County Cork.

It had a large Military presence prior to 1922.

You will find a number of queries on "Fermoy" recently on Irelandxo.

  • Hello Nancmoff,

There are a few townlands in County Cork which begin with the letters “Fer.” Two of these towns are Fermoy, which in the 19th century was in the Civil Parish of Fermoy; and Fermoyle, which was in the Civil Parish of Clonmeen.

For the names of the other townlands in County Cork beginning with the letters "Fer,"go to the IreAtlas Townland Data Base link at: https://is.gd/plso3m

The IreAtlas is based on the 1861 edition of the “General Alphabetical Index to the Townlands and Towns, Parishes and Baronies of Ireland,” printed by Alexander Thom, Abbey Street, Dublin.

The General Alphabetical Index… was compiled from those townlands in the 32 counties of Ireland that were recorded ten years earlier, in the 1851 census.

I looked for the County Cork Catholic Parish baptism transcriptions for Bartholomew, William, and John Howe, sons of William Howe, at the Find My Past (FMP) website but did not find any Howe baptisms for children whose father’s first name was William, before the year 1866.

Were your Howe ancestors Roman Catholic?

    Best Wishes,

    Dave Boylan

  • Hi,

Correction - The record of John Howe and Catherine Carey should read "Marriage", not Baptism.

Witnesses were Denis McGrath and Patrick Madden

  • How - Howe - William - Marriages in County Cork 1813:

    (1) William How to Catherine Hierlehy at Charleville R.C. Church on March 2nd 1813.

Witnesses: Elena Hierlehy and Thomas Walsh - Source: www.rootsireland.ie

    (2) William Howe to Mary Brennan at St. Mary's R.C. Church, Cork City on November 15th 1813.

    (3) John Howe to Margaret Baker at Kildorrery R.C. Church on October 28th 1813

    Source: www.findmypast.ie

Baptismal Sponsor for a Catherine Howe in Kilworh R.C. Church on April 25th 1832 was a Margaret Baker. Parents: John Howe and Honora Bastable.

No record for a William or Bartholomew Howe which would correspond with the dates as given.

The Surname "Howe" is recorded in British Military records in Ireland, including County Cork in the 1800's.
