Looking for relatives of my Great Grandfather James Ferris, we believe he came from County Kerry, near the Lakes of Killarney, he was born in 1844, & had a sister Bridget & Mary, and either a brother or cousin Philip.  He left for New Zealand in 1872 on the ship The Charlotte Gladstone.  He died in Gore, Southland,New Zealand in 1934 aged 90.   His sisters & Philip all came out to NZ as well.

  • Hi Maureen, Thanks for the suggestion, but I have searched that website numerous times to no avail, there are a few James Ferris' that come up, but they do not have the birth date anywhere near his.    Actually we are related to O'Connor's as well, my mother's mother was an O'Connor from Kingston Crossing in Southland, her grandparents were John & Catherine O'Connor.   Cheers,  Jan K, NZ

  • Hi Jan K

Do you know his parents names? it difficult as some have been lost, have you had a look at the www.familysearch.org website.

I have been researching mine and tracked them to Castlegregory, but I had a break through as an earlier generation some went to USA, and I have found probates in Sacramento that had depositions that were written in 1914 which I only found out because my aunty found 2 sheets of paper witn information about an estate in Sacramento it took me a while but last year I found 2 probates in Archives in Sacramento and this gave me information back to 1789 in Annascaul and Cam and Killarney to the Deanes Barry's Dowling of course O'Connor and many others. Do you know his parents names? most of our family are in the north island but some are down on the mainland as well.

Let me know how you get on

  • You asked if I knew my Great Grandfather's parents names, no we never ever found out who his parents were, and never really new the village he came from.  When he died there was an article about him in the Gore paper & it said that he came from County Kerry near the Lakes of Killarney.    I have done quite rigorous searches in those websites you suggested, none of the Ferris's mentioned seem to match my James,  he left Ireland in 1872 and arrived in NZ in 1873, his sister Bridget arrived on the same boat.   There was one family that matched as far as names went, but they were all the wrong age, I think it was the 1901 census, his parents would have been in the 70's by that time.   A number of the other Ferris names I looked at were from the US, we are pretty sure none of the family went to the US.    I got a copy of his marriage certificate in NZ to see if that would enlighten me, but that only had his wife's maiden name and nothing else, apparently they did not have to name the parents in those days.   I think I will order his death certificate that might have more information on it.           Anyway, thanks for all your help, I will let you know if anything turns up in the future .  Cheers, Jan
