Hi,
I am not sure if I am contacting the right parish??
Recently, I was researching my Raleigh family from Rawleighstown, Limerick and came across information that the Raleighs of Rawleighstown were on the Fiants records.
On the History Ireland magazine website- "A ‘fiant’ was a warrant by the deputy or council to the Irish Chancery to prepare letters-patent—published written orders to convey a right, an office, title to property or a pardon. The Fiants are statements of command."
I think they were issued from 1500-1700? Is anyone familiar with fiants and how to access the records? I tried the National Archives but might have been looking in the wrong place.
Thank you for your assistance. Mary

Fiants are mentioned in the introduction of Herbert Woods Guide to the records deposited in the Public Records Office of Ireland part 1, Chancery Enrolments, pdf page 16 - you can download parts 1 and 2 of this document at this link (National Archives of Ireland). This entry is just the introduction - there may be further detail in the main body of the work on the full details of Fiant records the PRO held. There is a project, Beyond2022 which aims to produce a virtual recreation of the Public Records Office building along with as much of the content as possible - most likely only partial details of certain collections and documents..
The Public Records Office in Dublin (part of the Four Courts) was destroyed in June 1922 during the civil war and most documents held there were destroyed.
It's possible that some of these old manuscripts may have ended up in other sources and archives closer to the area involved or even in further away in London or other UK archives, particularly since the dates you mentioned are before the Act of Union - might be worth checking

The project building the virtual Public Records Office archive and as much of the contents as possible is the one I mentioned Beyond2022 - you can see details on the website. There is work on recovering details from damaged/burned documents, but suspect these will result in mainly ragments - i.e. occasional, possible partial pages. The project is also looking into records held elsewhere copies, transcripts etc.
