Hi with reference to email received today, I'm posting a query on the IrelandXO Message Board in order to find out if the locally-based volunteers, and IrelandXO community members from all over the world, could help me figure out in more detail which county I'm descended from? If anyone could please help?

My story in short:  I'm Carol Dixon descended from James  Dixon and his wife Jane Dixon. James born circa 1770 and Jane born circa 1778  in Wicklow/Dublin. They had a son Benjamin Dixon born circa 1799 in Wicklow Ireland. Benjamin Dixon  married Maria Lovdy/Lovedia/Lodevia Manifold born circa 1808/1809 Wicklow Ireland. Maria was the daughter of Joseph and Jane Manifold (farmers) Jane Manifold's grave found at the Parish of St Paul, City of Dublin 14 June 1843. Joseph and Jane Manifold (1778 - 14 jun 1843) also had another daughter Rebecca Manifold Craig.

[[I THINK from research I've done through Griffith's Valuation Record Information, that James Dixon is from Dublin (there were many James Dixons though - County DUBLIN, Barony BALROTHERY EAST, Union BALROTHERY, Parish LUSK, Townland plot 115 LUSK - Publication Details Position on Page71 Printing Date 1847 Act 9&10 Sheet Number 8 Map Reference 60 115)]]

The families were Wesleyan Methodists. There is no record of Benjamin and Maria/Lovdy's marriage circa  December 1828 (married in Wicklow/Dublin) or their birth certificates - reputedly Wicklow both of them.  Benjamin and Maria emigrated to Cape Town, South Africa, and my great grandfather Richard Neptune Dixon (born circa March 1839/1840) might have been born at sea or in Ireland just before they left.  He had 4 brothers and sisters born in Wicklow County before they boarded the ship maybe December 1939. The brothers and sisters were Jane Dixon ( born circa 1830 Ireland),   Rebecca (born circa 1833 Ireland),  Ben [born circa 1836 County Dublin Ireland]  and James [ born circa 1838 Ireland] and my great grandfather Richard Neptune [born March circa 1839/1840 Ireland or  maybe at sea]

If anybody has any extra information on any of these people (especially James and Jane Dixon or Joseph and Jane Manifold who obviously remained in Ireland when their son Benjamin emigrated with his family, to enable us to place a vital piece of this puzzle, it would be deeply appreciated. Thanks so much. Carol  My email  91.3@iway.na  (Namibia)

  • Methodism took a long time to become a separate denomination in Ireland. (In short many Methodists didn’t want to separate from the Church of Ireland). It was the 1870s before all Methodists routinely married and baptised their children in their own Meeting Houses. The earliest Methodist baptisms in Ireland date from around 1816, though Primitive Methodists continued to use the Church of Ireland for decades after that. There are no Methodist marriages earlier than 1835.  So for a couple born in the 1770s and married c 1798, they would have been using the Church of Ireland.  Not all Church of Ireland records have survived and of those that have, not all are on-line.
