Hi,

My ancestor Michael Haran's birth was registered in Swinford/Kilconduff in March 1874, and the address of him and his parents (on the transcription) is a place called Cloonlara. I would love to be able to find out where Cloonlara is/was or what it looked like, and the record doesn't say whether Cloonlara is their street name, a house, a farm, an outlying village, hamlet or suburb of Swinford or anything like that. Internet searches for it don't seem to give very much information: it's not even marked on Google Maps and I can't find any 19th century online maps which go into enough detail to be able to see it. I also tried looking at the Griffith's Valuation map for Swinford but couldn't make out any place names. One townland information website did give its Irish name though: Cluain Lara. Is it normal for there to be such little online information for Irish addresses? How can I find out more about it?

Thank you,

Georgina

  • Georgina: I located Cloonlara on my version of Google Maps. As shown on the map Patricia sent you, Cloonlara is about 1 1/2 miles northeast of Swinford town. Cloonlara is 488 acres in size. In the 1855 Griffiths, there were 34 households in Cloonlara. You can go to askaboutireland.ie to look at where the holdings were and then see a view of the current properties. There was a Bridget Harn household and I'm wondering if she was the mother of Michael Haran father of the 1874 Michael Haran 1901 census showed 25 households. Roger McDonnell

  • Thank you Patricia for the lovely map, it helped us a lot. Looking at the Griffith's Valuation map and modern map overlay is a really useful tool and helped us understand the place more. Unfortunately Michael's mother was called Mary not Bridget, but his paternal grandmother was called Bridget so the household on Griffith's Valuation could possibly be her? Thank you Roger for your quick response. We will keep searching :)
