For the past 3 generations my family has been in the states. Im looking into my family history and it stops at when my Ggrand-mother moved here, our Irish last name was O'Erie and i would love to know anything about them if someone has any information or if they know anyone with the name. Thank you!

  • No-one of that name appears in the 1901 census for Ireland, nor in Griffiths Valuation (1848 ? 1864) nor in the statutory records of births, deaths & marriages in Ireland which start in 1845. The name is completely unknown in Ireland. I have checked under Erie as well as O?Erie as the O & Mac prefixes were frequently disregarded.

If the family originated in Ireland, then the name has changed somewhere along the way. Difficult to know what it may have been in Ireland. Nothing obvious springs to mind. O'Leary perhaps?

  • Hi Nikki,

I couldn't find any O'Eries either but there is a baptism record of Ann Erie in Dublin 1779.

I imagine her father was Erie also.

O' means 'son of' as you probably know so perhaps it was dropped at some stage.
