I am the great granddaughter of Michael Conroy. I was always told our family was from Mayo and in my DNA research it seems like we were from the Cong area. All I know is my Great Grandfather was Michael Conroy son of Patrick and Catherine Conroy (according to his death certificate). He was born abt 1858/1860 and came to the United States abt 1878/1880 and was married to Winifred Mellet. Not sure if they were married in Ireland or the US. They had their first son Martin while living in Pittsburgh, PA in 1883. They then moved to Brooklyn, NY and had John, Catherine, Mary and Annie. Martin and Catherine were the only 2 children to live a long life. John, Mary and Annie died before the age of 5. Martin Was my grandfather and he married Florence Darcy, they had four children Martin, Francis, Mary and Florence. They lived in Brooklyn, NY. Michael Conroy died in 1900 and Winifred in 1905.  This is all I know and I am hoping to find them in Ireland..

Any help is so greatly appreciated I can be reached at patgov53@gmail.com

Unfortunately the baptismal records for the RC parish of Cong start in 1870. Also, civil registration of births did not begin until 1864 after Michael's birth. I did search on the subscription site Roots Ireland and did not find any baptismal records for younger siblings of Michael.

I also looked at the 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Cong civil parish and there was a Patrick Conroy leasing land in Creevagh North townland. Possibly this Patrick was the father of Michael Conroy.

I also searched for a marriage record for Michael and Winifred but did not locate a record. Likely they married in America.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Do you have parents names for Winifred? There are three possibilities in Mayo and Galway around 1860.

  • Thank you so much for your help.  Winifred's parents were Martin and Winifred Millett. (her surname was found spelled 2 ways Mellett and Millett) In her obituary it states she was a native of Cong County Mayo. The only other clue on the Conroy name is that on one of the Baptizmal certificate for one of the children was a Bridget Conroy. I don't know if she was a sister, cousin or married into the Conroy family.

  • Sorry I forgot to add that Bridget was the Godmother / witness at the baptizm.

No luck on a baptismal record for Winifred Mellett (sp) because she was from Cong. The only Martin Mellott in the Griffiths in the general area was in Carrowmore townland in Ballinrobe civil parish. So you have two location possibilities for Patrick Conroy/Conry and Martin Mellott.

I did some checking of death records. There were a number of Patrick Conry/Conroy records and the Patrick Conroy in Creevagh died in 1865 at age 77 which tells me that the Patrick Conry that McCoy found in the town of Cong is more likely the father of Michael Conroy.

There was a Martin Mellot who died in 1899 at age 80. A granddaughter Mary was the informant. Lived in Creevagh. See seventh record.

  • Thank you everyone for your help.  I was just told of a story that was told to my father and his siblings which might be of some help.  He was told that his great grandfather but not sure wich one was supposedly a Mayor of Mayo.  So this would have to be sometime in the early 1800's.  These are my family names that I know of Conroy, Mellet, Darcy and Gannon. I dont know any of the surnames to the wifes other then Mellet and Gannon.

Determined to find my roots and visit.

    Thank you again
