I will try to be as clear as possible with details here.

John Foley Born 1796 County Clare, Ireland (potentially Ennisymon) married in 1915 to Bridget Quinn born 1793.

They had children Mary 1815, Ann 1817, John 1821, Honora 1822, Thady 1825, Susan/Judith 1827, William 1829, William 1830 and Conor 1833.

Daughter Ann is my 3rd great grandmother. She had a son, Michael, in Ireland 1852 but travelled to Australia without him. She married George Taylor in Australia in 1855.

Ann's sister Honora and her husband Edward Tyrell also came to Australia, arriving in 1854 with their 4 eldest children.

In 1858, their mother Bridget came to Australia bringing Michael and cousin Bridget (Hanora's youngest).

Michael was raised as George's son and given his surname, we were not aware that Michael was not the biological child of George until I found his Will just recently. Michael travelled with the surname Brennan and is referred to in George's will as Michael Brennnan.

Ann and Honora's brothers Thady (Thomas), John and wife Catherine Wallace also settled in Australia.

We were I am struggling to find the father of Michael, and was hoping for some assistance please.

I would also like to find further information on Bridget Foley, nee Quinn. She was born in 1793 to parents Partick Quinn and Mary Looney. Bridget remained in Australia and died here in 1880.

Any help would be deeply appreciated.

  • Dear Grayfox80:

That is a very interesting family history post that you have written!  Unfortunately, the Ennistymon parish registers only begin in 1870, so information that you are looking for will have to be found from other sources.  Have you looked at the Clare Library website?  If not, it is a very good place to start.  The link is here:  http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/genealogy/genealog.htm

You can search by Civil parish which in your case will be several as Ennistymon is the Catholic parish that is part of the following civil parish:
    Kilmanaheen http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/places/kilmanaheen.htm

You can view the resources that are available with regard to this civil parish.  These will include graveyard transcription, Griffith's Valuation occupiers, and other sources that may assist you with the research that you are looking for.

If you need any other information, please let me know.  I live in County Clare, and I may be able to ask a few locals in that area for further guidance.

    All the best,

    Jane

  • Dear Grayfox80:

I understand your frustration.  Ennistymon research is a challenge.  On a positive note, be sure to keep checking back on the site, as new material is being uploaded all the time.

I will also make some enquiries to see if anyone might be able to assist with some local history.

    All the best,

    Jane
