Good Evening,

I am looking for advice, assistance or help with tracing both my paternal ancestors & my wife's paternal ancestors who we believe were born in Dublin.

Foley  / Chute

My 3 x great grandafther was Timothy Foley. We have their son,Timothy's, 1st marriage certificate that shows This shows his parents as Timothy Foley & Ann Chute. We are looking for any advice or help with identifying links to the Chute family along with any further info on the Foley's.

Stanley / Hennessy

On my wife's side we have identified her 3 x great grandparents as William Stanley & Katherine (Kate) Hennessy.

We have struggled to find any information regarding William's birth & death. The 1891 census shows Kate & her children (Lavinia, Frederick, Harriet & Charles) in Liverpool but does not show anything to indicate that William was with them.

We believe Kate was born about 1842, her father was Christopher who was an 'accouter' (possibly to do with army uniforms) & her mother is Judith.

We would like to find more information about both the Stanley & Hennessy family if possible.

Any help or assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards

Gary Comer

  • Gary,

I have searched the subscription site rootsireland.ie.

The only Christopher Stanley I could find recorded as being married in the timeframe in Ireland was at Arran Quay in 1852. Christopher Stanley married Jane Divine. Christopher and Jane had a daughter Catherine in 1853. There is no record that I could find for Christopher and Judith. It is possible that Christopher and Judith were married in a parish where records were not kept at the time.

There is no record in Ireland that I could find for a marriage between Timothy Foley and Ann Chute.

    Best wishes, Kieran

  • Hi Gary,

There is a baptism record of a Timothy Joseph Foley at St. Audoen's R.C. Church, Dublin on April 12th 1850. Father: Timothy Foley  -  Mother: Anne Foley. Sponsors: John Sumerfield and Mary Mullin.

Records: Dublin Workhouses Admissions and Discharges Regiser - 1840 to 1919:  Anne Foley, 50 years, Widow, 25, Poolbeg Street, Dublin, November 1870, Timothy Foley, 20 years, Coach Painter, same address. The period appears to be the 22nd November to 26th.

There is an entry for a Timothy Foley in January 1871, Painter, No Abode.

According to Dr. Edward MacLysaght - Surnames of Ireland - the name Chute is of English origin, but has been prominent in County Kerry since early 17th century. Foley is another name which is prominent in County Kerry. It is possible that this couple are from County Kerry and having married, moved to Dublin?

  • Hi Kieran,

    Thank you for your response.

The Christopher who I make reference to is Christopher Hennessy, not Stanley. We have him recorded as Kate Hennessy's father.

It's William Stanley & Kate Hennessy's marriage that has us at a loss.

We really do appreciate you taking the time to respond with information & along with the advice you give.

    Thanks again!!

    Kind regards

    Gary

  • Gary,

    Apologies about that!

A bit like yoursef I struck a blank. I could not find any record on rootsireland.ie of a Stanley-Hennessy marraige in Ireland at any time.

    Best wishes, Kieran
