Hi, Im looking for any links to the Foy family of Bohola

My great grandfather James Foy was born in 1873 in Achonry, Mayo. Parents listed as Patt Foy and Bridget Foy.

He married Hannah Brunt in 1906 in Wakefield, England and then settled in Rotherham, England where he dies in 1937.

His father is listed as Patt Foy on his marriage certificate. I have found a marriage for a Patt Foy and Bridget Foy (maiden name also Foy) in  1871, Bohola and this family are listed on the 1901 census.

James and Hannah's chidren have the same names as his siblings listed on the 1901 census so I am pretty sure this is the right family.

I have had mine and my mothers DNA tested and our matches seem to have Martin Foy and Judy (aka Julia) McDonnell in their trees who were also from Bohola. I am struggling to find a link between these two families.

My GEDMATCH is UZ3174664

Does any of this ring a bell or can anyone shed any light?

Thankyou in advance

Claire Foster

  • Hello Claire,

My great grandfather John Foy was born in 1871 in Bohola, Mayo.

He married Catherine Power in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, England in 1899.

My grandfather, Martin J Foy, was born in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent in 1900.

I'm not aware of any O'Donnells or McDonnells in our family line, but I'm a beginner at these genealogical investigations, so have little information about the broader family in that era.

    Best regards,
    Glenn
