Good morning from Queensland, Australia. I have an odd question that I have been stuck on for quite a while. My great grandfather, Thomas Patrick O'Shea migrated to Australia in 1911 at the age of 6 with his siblings and parents Cornelius O'Shea and Mary (nee Whelan). Before this, Con was a publican in Galbally, Limerick and census records indicate that he was also a grocer. I have the family living in Galbally in the 1901 census. I would love to bring my mum (also an O'Shea) over to visit Galbally one day and visit the pub that they lived in.
My question is: are there any records or is there any way of knowing which pub they resided? It was in the town square but I am very unsure. Thanks so much to anyone who can offer any insight.

Yes, it should be possible to find the house they lived in. The census records give a description of the house (form B, number 40), there may be somebody in Galbally that remembers, a bit of detective work with the 1911 census or there may be a record in Griffiths Valuation. There may also be local history records in Galbally. I am not too far from Galbally and could help with the search, although with Covid restrictions that would be challenging currently. Let me know if/when you are coming to Galbally and I will be able to help.

I've done some digging around Galbally and have found an answer for you! A local man had information that O'Shea's indeed owned a pub in Galbally, apparently called Scanlon's pub at the time. He knew that they left between 1901 and 1911; two children, father called Cornelius. This pub is still a pub today - currently called the Abbey Bar and owned by a man called Joe Kearns. Indoor hospitality is due to reopen after Covid restrictions on the 26th (next Monday), so the pub may be reopening then (they have been closed since Christmas in Ireland).
I hope this is useful information. At least now you may have a site to visit and get a pint.
