Hi, I am searching for information for my family from Donegal who migrated to Scotland.

William Gallagher (Born 1780's) who was married to Susan McCue I believe they were from Donegal.  They had a son William born circa 1805, he later moved to Scotland.  He was married to a Maria Kelly who I guess was also born in Donegal we are not sure what hapoened to Maria as he married was subsequently married 2 further times until he passed away in Scotland.

I also found who I believe may have been a cousin from the same area in Scotland.  a Patrick Gallagher married a Catherine McCue prsumably from Donegal and had a son Miles Gallagher who was born circa 1813/14 I believe in Donegal and he died in Scotland in 13th Feb 1864 aged 50years.

We have hit a brick wall any input welcome.

I assume your ancestors were Roman Catholic. Unfortunately, finding Roman Catholic records in Co. Donegal is virtually impossible.I believe one parish has records starting 1838, a few in the 1840s and the others 1850s and beyond.

The Tithe listings from the early 1830s show six William Gallaghers but we don't know if your ancestor was still alive in 1830 or if alive captured in the Tithes.

    Have you considered DNA testing?

  • Thanks Roger for the quick reply, I have considered DNA testing but not taken that step yet.
