Hi,

I'm looking for more information on the family of Richard Garland and Mary Donnelly of Crew who had 8 children from 1841 to 1866. Most websites only have errigal kieran/keerogue baptism records going back to 1847, but I recently discovered that rootsireland has them going back to 1834. All websites have the church marriage records going back to only 1864 though. Does anyone know if earlier marriage exist anywhere and just haven't been scanned and put online yet? If baptisms back to 1834 exist, you would think the marriage records back to that time have also survived. I do have Richard and Mary's death certificates and Richard's will, but I haven't been able to find anything about any of their parents. From examining the names of sponsors on the baptism records, Mary may have had brothers named Edward and Terence, and Richard may have had a brother named John or James. Richard's surname appears sometimes as Gartland. Thanks.

  • It’s quite common for parish records to have baptisms starting in one year and marriages in another. My understanding is that the bishops’ instructions were to keep both, and if so, then if there’s a difference in the start dates it’s because some records are missing.  Gaps in records are very common in Ireland. A mixture of accidental damage, negligence, fire, slack record keeping etc, etc.

I agree that rootsireland do have records for that parish which are earlier than any held by PRONI or on the nli site. However they only seem to have baptisms. No marriages pre 1864 as you say. You could contact the parish office and check. Having said that, in my experience of RC marriage records from the 1830s & 40s in Ireland, all you get are the couples names, the date and their 2 witnesses. No parents names or other information that you get later in the century. So even if you did find a marriage, I am not sure you would get any more information than you already have.
