He emigrated to Western Australia early 1892.  His emigration records state born 15 Jan 1873 in Glinahue, Cloghane, Castlegregory, Co Kerry.

Per his marriage cert:  parents James Fitzgerald (farmer) and Honoria Johnson.

I found these parents with baptisms in Killiny Parish and Civil Registration of Dingle Union, District Castlegregory, Co Kerry, for Garrett and sibling I know of:  James, Hanorah and Ned.  Garrett had twin brothers James and Ned and per this parish's records, the family had James and Edmondus as twins.  There were other children born to these parents, but I had not heard of them.

His siblings James and Hanorah, emigrated to the US in 1897 and 1899/1900 respectively.

With the records I can find of the people I know in this family, I cannot get their baptism dates and other documented dates to marry up, they are out by a couple of years, so I cannot be sure it is the correct family.

Eg:  Garrett baptised 1871 other records show born 1873.  James baptised 1872 records show born 1876.  Hanorah baptised 1880 records show born 1877/78.

A relative visited Garrett's birth place in 1960's and took these photo's. One is of the family home ruins.  I'm not sure the location and no records from this visit.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When emigrants left Ireland for their new country they frequently changed their year of birth in the new country either to make themselves younger or odler to suit their interests. I think that is what you are seeing looking at trying to "marry up" records.

I did some searching on the free site www.irishgenalogy.ie and found some records which you may already have.

I located the civil marriage record for James and Honoria.  They were married March 5 1867. The names of their fathers are listed on the record. James was from Drom.

Here is the civil birth record for Garrett in 1871 (second record).

4th record Edward in 1873  actually born late December 1872

    3rd record James 1873 actually born 1872

There were too many Fitzgerald birth records in the Dingle registration district to try to find other birth records.

I did locate this 1901 census record which may be your family?  http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Kerry/Ballyduff/Drom_W…

  • Hi Roger

    Many thanks for your reply.

I was absolutely thrilled to hear from you and feel I can now move on with my research, instead of feeling I was confronted with a brick wall.

    Kind regards
