Kiwi connection looking for information about George COATES who came from Eyrecourt, Galway, Ireland. Born abt 1807 Died 21 March 1853 Hobart, Tasmania, Australia.Understand George was a British soldier who came out to Australia as a guard on a convict ship. He was an overseer of a womens prison in Tasmania at the time of his death. His wife Ann Catherine ROSS remarried in 1855. They had 6 children Margaret, Charles, Christina, Mary Ann, Luke & Abigail. I come through Luke Francis Coates who eldest daughter was my great grandmother. Only Margaret came to New Zealand the remainder of the family either stayed in Australia or returned to the UK. Hi,
Thank you for your message.
Unfortunately, Catholic records for the parish of Clonfert do not start until 1884 so you will be unable to find George's birth record.
I checked for the surname Coates in the Tithe Applotment Books. These are land records that were compiled between 1823 and 1837 in order to determine the amount which occupiers of agricultural holdings should pay in tithes to the Church of Ireland (the main Protestant church, and the church established by the state until its disestablishment in 1871). There is a manuscript book for almost every parish, giving the names of occupiers, the amount of land held, and the sums to be paid in tithes. A result came back for a Samuel Coates in Clonfert parish, however it is impossible to know whether this Coate is related to your family or not without more information:
There is a Mary Coates recorded in the same parish in the later Griffith?s Valuation (1848-64):
I did a search for George Coates at www.familysearch.org and a result came back that could possibly be relevant to you. The hit was from United Kingdom, Chelsea Pensioners' Service Records, 1760-1913, as George was a British Soldier it is very likely that he would have been in receipt of a pension. The birth year also matches:

For more information on these records I would check the UK National Archives at http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/
It may also be an idea to contact the East Galway Family History Society to see if they can give you any more assistance, however a fee may apply. Here is their email: galwayroots@eircom.net
In the meantime some other websites that you may find useful are:
