My ggg grandmother was Maria Grace, who emigrated to Australia. Her father was George Grace married to Hannah Anne Lane, her paternal grandfather was George Grace, barrister and Proprietor of the Clonmel Herald and, following the male line, her grandfather was George Grace Esq of Brittas, married to Mary Egan or Carroll, then Martha Clarke. This earliest George was a nephew of Oliver Grace of Brittas Castle, Tipperary and inherited the estate when Oliver's sons died without male issue (described in the will extracts from both Oliver and George). I'm struggling to determine who George's father was and to work out who was the father of Oliver and his brother. Oliver's youngest daughter Margaret inherited Brittas Castle and it passed to Henry Langley when she married. Henry Langley wrote that Margaret's father Oliver was the grandson of John Grace of Brittas by his wife Joan, daughter of Thomas Butler Esq of Brittas. A Deed of Settlement in 1666 gave the castle and lands of Brittas to John Grace Esq. NUI Galway states that the Grace family seem to have inherited the Brittas estate from their Butler connections. St Mary's churchyard Thurles has a Grace memorial for John Grace of Brittas Castle, married to Ellen Purcell of Loughmore Castle. This John died in 1683. I found an extract of his will which leaves furniture, pictures, book, money to his sons Nicholas, Richard and James and to his daughter Macdonnell. The money was stored in chests in Brittas castle but there's no mention in the extract of whether the castle itself or any lands passed to a son. I'm wondering whether anyone has an historical knowledge of the Grace families in Tipperary or any ideas about how I can further unravel the Grace familiy connections. I haven't been able to find where any are buried, other than John mentioned above and George Grace the barrister who is buried in St Mary's church, Clonmel. Mabel Langley has a recording entitled Irish Life and Lore in which she mentions the family graveyard at Brittas. Does anyone know about this and if it is there, any way I could find out what the inscriptions are?

  • Hi Margot. I really appreciate the time you have taken to try to help me and for the links you have sent. Unfortunately I had already checked all of these sources of information. I have a lot of information about the Graces but am at a loss as to how to uncover more. I know a couple of the other names from the marriage record you sent are connected to George Grace of Brittas: Mary married to Hazzard Ryves was a daughter of George and his second wife Martha. The Dublin Evening Mail in 1848 had the following In Fethard aged 77 years Mrs Mary Ryves, relict of Hazzard Ryves of Cashel and sister of George Grace Esq, Barrister at law and late of Cashel; Harriot Grace married to Michael Browne was another daughter of George and Martha.

There seems to be plenty of information about what happened to Brittas Castle after Margaret married Henry Langley but very little about the period beforehand. George Grace (nephew of Oliver of Brittas Castle) was married to Mary Egan (or Carroll) by 1747 as she is included as his wife in a number of Court of Chancery records as early as 1747 and he was married to Martha Clarke some time after late 1757 but well before 1768 when he wrote his will, as he already had a number of children by Martha by then.

I have had no luck finding any of the graves of the family members that I know of (have searched through all the records from Tipperary Studies) which is why I'm wondering whether there was a family graveyard at the castle. Thanks again, Jenny

  • Ok, I did notice this from a ship list....... do you know him?     West Gate is in County Wexford.

GRACE Patrick 1859 25 Britis ,Thurles (IDJ) xx Referrees=John Grace of West Gate & Anthony Dwy er.Pd for by John Grace,Maitland. Ship = Daphne

Look at County Waterford as Clonmel records overlap Tipperary and Waterford.

The marriage of George Grace and Hannah Lane was in 1817 in Waterford.... Waterford and Lismore.
There is a tree in familysearch stating the place name as Drumconnon which is north of Tramore.
I will come back as I need to do a bit more digging.

  • Hi Margot. I don't know anything about the reference to Patrick Grace but will look into it and see what I can find.  Some of the Grace records are for catholic families whereas my ancestors seem to have belonged to the Church of Ireland at least back as far as George who married Mary Egan, in the 1740s as they had a Prerogative Marriage Licence. John Grace married to Ellen Purcell were Catholic so I don't know exactly when at least some branches of the family changed to the Church of Ireland.

Re George Grace married to Hannah - the Roots Ireland record has them married in the Church of Ireland, Parish of Drumcannon, Co Waterford. They were married in Tramore and Hannah was the daughter of William Lane Esq, barrister and Vicar General of the Diocese of Waterford and Lismore. I have information about them and all of their children - Maria and Elizabeth emigrated to Australia, William Arthur emigrated to the USA, George Weston died at age 17 and Anne married David Francis Hearn (I don't know what happened to this couple after their marriage). After George died, Hannah remarried to John Nixon and had another daughter - Arabella Francis Nixon. Kind regards, Jenny
