I am hoping to visit Roscommon (Ballaghderreen in particluar) in September 2019 and any pointers in helping me locate information about my ancestors (the Giblin family) would be appreciated.

One of my grandmothers was a Giblin and I can trace her line of the family back to the early 1800s. At some point the family moved to Liverpool, where my mother was later born.

I have information that a Roger Giblin was born in about 1823 in Ireland. He was a farmer. He died on 5 December 1891 in Hogfield, Gurteen. He married Bridget Harkin. She was born in 1826 and died on 13 December 1890 in Hogfield, Gurteen.

Roger Giblin and Bridget Harkin had the following children:

• BRIDGET GIBLIN born 9 March 1852 in Ballaghaderreen.

• OWEN GIBLIN born 19 January 1854 in Ballaghaderreen.

• MICHAEL GIBLIN born 22 May 1857 in Ballaghaderreen.

• CATHERINE GIBLIN born 14 December 1859 in Ballaghaderreen.

• ROGER GIBLIN born 19 June 1864 in Ballaghaderreen.

• ALICE GIBLIN born 17 August 1866 in Ballaghaderreen.

• MARGARET GIBLIN born 15 August 1868 in Gurteen.

• OWEN GIBLIN born 28 January 1872 in Hogfield, Gurteen.

Are there any libraries/record offices/graveyards that migh be worth visiting?

Many thanks,

Roger

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I will alert our HQ about your visit. I am the parish liaison for Castlemore parish which includes Ballaghaderreen. However, I live in the States.

I did some searching on the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie which has images of birth (1864-1918)  marriage (1864-1943 and death (1878-1968) records. I located the civil birth records for Roger, Alice and Margaret. See below. It looks like the clerk made a mistake on Alice's record and showed the wrong name for the mother. All records including the death records show Hogfield, whIch is a local place name. I believe the townland is Lomcloon in Killaraght civil parish Co. Sligo which is about 10 kilometers northeast of Ballaghaderreen. I included the civil death records for Roger and Bridget. Roger's record shows he was a widower and died on December 5th but Bridget's record showed she was married and died on December 13th. I think Roger's date is correct but Bridget actually died earlier possibly in November but the family did not register the birth timely. When they finally registered the death, they showed a later date than was was the true date.

I provided links to the Ballaghaderreen library and also to the Tubbercurry branch library in Sligo which would be the closest to Killaraght civil parish.

The main cemetery in Ballaghaderreen would be Old Kilcolman cemetery just a short drive out of town. I checked Historicgraves and did nott see a Giblin record.  The RC parish of Ballaghaderren is actually the Cathedral seat for the Diocese of Achonry which mainly covers parishes in Mayo and Sligo (As you likely know all three counties come together near Ballaghaderreen).  One of the sub-parishes within Ballaghaderreen parish is St. Aidans church in Monasteraden Co. Sligo. See link below. That church may have info on the cemetery in the area. Monasteraden would be closer to Lomcloon.

Let me know what questions you have or any additional assistance.
