Looking for any information on Kingsmill GILTINAN (Francis Joseph Kingsmill GILTINAN) and his wife Alice AUSTIN (?).. Immigrated to Australia in 1837 on board the 'Lady McNaughton". They travelled with children Mary Ann 1825-1864; Elizabeth (Eliza) 1826-1875; John 1830-1890; Kingsmill 1833-?; Alice 1834-? (this is the only child I have yet found a baptism record for in Cork); Kingsmill's father is listed on his death record as "John".  Four other children were born in NSW.  Have found mention of Kingsmill (plus John and Daniel GILTINAN) "Freeman of the City of Cork" and "The Constitution of Cork Advertiser".  Any other information would be gratefully appreciated.  Cheers, Denise

  • Hi Denise, appears we may not have an active Cork volunteer but at that remove records are few, the name I thought was unusual so I searched the archive of the City Council to see it is still in Cork, lived in the lovely city many years ago and never met one though but appears one at least is an author and there is mention of a sculptor. See http://www.corkpastandpresent.ie/history/ and http://www.corkcitylibraries.ie/central/corklocalstudies/ This is the city library and there is also a county library but a Freeman suggests the city, there should be a list of these in the local authority archive, drop them an email, I have always found the local history sections of libraries most helpful.

While it sounds odd if you include the religion of the person it assists in where to look, for instance there is a book on the Quakers of Cork, also the Church of Ireland have their own library etc

For the period in question the British Newspaper Archive is possibly the best one to search, it is a subscription site.

This site is being updated and may turn up some thing later, there does not appear to be a Giltinan on it currently, https://irishdeedsindex.net/index.php

I did not see the name in the Flax Growers or Tithes in Cork, Flax Growers is 1796 and the tithes are from 1823 to 1837, list of taxpayers to the church who owned over an acre. The Tithes are a precise search is if the name is slightly out it may not show.

Sorry I am not a great help but a search on a subscription site turned up nothing for the time, I searched the Tithes for a Christian name Kingsmill and got a hit in Mallow, Co. Cork, such an odd name, there is a place in Northern Ireland by that name. The Tithes are here, http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp

    Good Luck,

    Pat
