Hello my Horan and Moran and Shannon ancestors lived in Glantavraun. I have seen census records but can't narrow down which houses they lived in as the houses are just numbered. Is there any way to identify these houses as they are today, from these census numbers?
Best wishes

Mike:
The house numbers in the censuses were at random. The censuses were taken on March 31st. The local RIC constable picked up the forms in April from each household. When he went into a townland such as Glantavraun, the first house he visited was labeled House 1, the second House 2 etc. In 1911, the constable may have come into the townland in a different direction and so a house which was House 1 in 1901 might have been House 12 in 1911. There is a Facebook group called Genealogy of Kilmovee. You may want to join the group and possibly somewhere there may be able to assist you further.

In case you're interested, you can see more info about Glentavraun at this link, which contains further links to other records, such as those from Griffith's Valuation (mid-1850's), showing a number of tenants/landowners with those surnames:
https://www.townlands.ie/mayo/costello/kilmovee/urlaur/glentavraun/
and here is a link to the Catholic parish records which are available online for Kilmovee, which go back as far as 1854 for baptisms, with some marriage records back to the 1820's:

Another thing about house numbers in a census - there were fewer households on 1911 census. A member of my family was from Glan. The numbers for their house were different on 1901 and 1911 census. They hadn't moved house. Some families had moved away or people had died so there were fewer households in the census collector's round.
There is a map to accompany Griffith's Valuation. You can enlarge it to see individual land holdings and houses.
Have you traced your ancestors back before the 1901 census to try to work out who were likely to have been tenants in 1850's when Griffith's Valuation was done? Not easy with names Horan and Moran.
I began a thread on here a couple of years ago about a Horan and a Moran from Kilmovee. You can find it by doing a search for either surname on the message board and selecting Mayo for county. We looked at a few Horan and Moran families. A descendent of one replied.
I joined Kilmovee Genealogy group recently and found a distant relative of my great-grandma. There are people in the group who live in or near Kilmovee.
There are Horans and Morans from Kilmovee in Rossendale, Lancashire, England. Some have married each other.

Thanks to everyone who has replied to my original query and apologies for not replying before now but this is the first time I've seen the replies. Don't know why it's taken so long to appear in my emails.
