Hi looking for any additional information to my ancestors and families.

My 3x grandmother was Susan or Susannah Gordon born about 1832, she came to Australia as an Irish Orphan on the Diadem 12/1/1850. Information states she was from the Parish of Armaghbreague, Corkley, she had 1st been admitted to Tyrone workhouse 20/3/1844 to 16/10/1844 with her mother Margaret Mallon aged 57, sisters Martha 10yrs, Matilda 7yrs, and brother John 14yrs, and admitted multiple times afterwards.

Death cert states father John Gordon, mother Margaret

I have found some baptism records: Parents John Gordon and Margaret (Peggy) Mallon from Corkley, Keady, Church of Ireland for:

Ann Gordon 14/6/1814

Elizabeth Gordon 20/8/1820

John Gordon 25/5/1828

No records found for Susan, Matilda or Martha

I've found Marriage records for a Martha Gordon to George Dodds 27/9/1865 at Keady Church Fathers: John Gordon Farmer and William Dodds Blacksmith, 1st witness is William Marshall possibly uncle married to below Jane Gordon

Through DNA results with ancestry I think John Gordon's parents were Samuel Gordon and Margaret ?, Corkley, Keady, Church of Ireland, children as follows:

John b1797

Eleanor b1799

Sarah b1802

Alexander b1804

Jane b1806 Married William Marshall 1807-1870

Any information on any of these people above would be amazing to fill my ancestry tree,

Thankyou, Lynn

Macjohn

  • Armaghbrague and Corkley are different places. Armaghbrague is a townland in the parish of Lisnadill. Confusingly it is also an alternative name for the parish of Keady. Corkley is a townland in the parish of Keady though it may have been moved to Lisnadill at some point, judging by some of the land records. The 2 townlands share a common border, but as I say are separate places and in different parishes, which may affect the church records you need. You can see where both are by using the maps on the Griffiths Valuation website.

    John Gordon is listed in the tithe applotment records for Armaghbrague townland in 1832, so that confirms he was a farmer there then:

    I can see a Gordon farm in Corkley in Griffiths (1864). William Gordon had plot 1 which looks to have been a 65 acre farm. It’s still farmland today though the house is long gone. Presumably the farm has been merged with another nearby. By 1884 the tenant was George Fleming.

    Here’s a link to the marriage of Martha Gordon in 1865.

    She lived in Tullyglush. That’s about half a mile west of Corkley. There was  a James & William Gordon there in 1864, though no John. Tradition was to marry in the bride’s church so assuming it’s your family that tells you Keady Churhc of Ireland is the Gordon church. The records cover the following years. You will see that there is a 7 year gap in the baptisms, often due to records being lost or damaged. That may account for your not finding all the family’s baptisms you are looking for:

    Baptisms, 1780-1818 and 1825-71;

    marriages, 1780-1845;

    burials, 1815-18 and 1826-80;

    confirmations,1828 and 1833.

    Have you searched the church burial records for John & Margaret’s burials? Margaret’s admission to the workhouse might indicate he had died pre 1844.

    PRONI has a lease for John Gordon of Corkley, D889/1/244 dated 11 July 1837

    Lease for 4 yrs, by John Gordon, farmer, Corkley, Co. Armagh, to Nathaniel Murphy, innkeeper, of Tassagh, Co. Armagh, of meadow and premises in Corkly, parish of Armaghhague, Co. Armagh.

    I suspect the John Gordon of Corkley was a different man to the John Gordon of Armaghbrague.
