I am researching the history of my Phelan family who have lived at Goresgrove and Sragh from before 1800 to the present day. Nearby is the townland of Garryhiggin which contains the ruins of a Norman castle, with a house attached... the Phelans have also farmed that land at Garryhiggin in the past. I have an extensive history of the house, the Castle was probably built by the Shortall family and the house added by Captain Charles Gore, when given the land by Oliver Cromwell after the settlement. Ownership eventually passed to the Colclough family who lived there from around 1800 until they emigrated en masse to Australia in the 1850s, settling in Victoria. The house was sold by William Colclough around 1863... what I would like to know is who lived there after 1860 and when was the house last lived in? There are stories of my grandfather, Patrick Phelan, going to the 'Big House' and playing cards there which could have been any dates between 1880 to 1930. Are there any officially kept records for land and property ownership? And if so, where might they be kept? Thanks in anticipation. Jim Phelan

Jim:
Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
From the 1901 and 1911 census records, it appears a Campion family owned the house. See links below and also check out form B1 for the the number of rooms etc.

This link http://www.irish-genealogy-toolkit.com/revision-books.html will give you a lot of info on the Griffiths Valuation Revision books which are held in the Valuation office in Dublin. At some point, these books will be digitized and placed online (the books for Northern Ireland counties are online now).

Many thanks for the speedy reply Roger. It seems that House 1 was occupied by Margaret Campion 70, along with her son Andrew and his Wife Johanna. 10 years later the same house is still occupied by Andrew & Johanna.
Meanwhile, in the big house with the 9 front windows (Goresgrove House), William Campion was there with his family of 9 in 1901 but 10 years later the house was unoccupied. A local man, Paddy Tobin, now in his 80s, recalls two Butler sisters from Ballingarry returning from America to live at the house... and although the building was vacant, the owner was named as Statia Butler. Could these have been the last to live there? And where did William and his family of 9 move to?

hi
I am trying to find Goreshouse on an OS Map, but not having much look. I am visiting the area next week. My Great Grandfather owned the property, accoring tothe 1901 census. It will be such a shame if I can't visit. Any help will be appreciated.

Use Google Maps. Goresgrove is five miles southeast of Urlingford.

Hello, a couple/few of my Fox family members also occupied land & were tenant farmers on the land across from the castle. One of them Terrance Fox (b. 1820) married Anastasia Phelan (b. 1827) in 1854. Wonder if there's a connection, Jim Phelan?
