My third great-grandfather, Andrew Gott, placed a notice in the Boston Pilot in August of 1861, looking for his brother William who had emigrated to the United States 14 years earlier and was thought to be living in Canada West. He stated that his brother was a native of Deehacher, County Fermanagh. There is no such townland. Some have suggested that perhaps the clerk who typed the notice couldn't read Andrew's handwriting, or if it was an oral account, he may have tried writing it phonetically. Could Deehacher possibly be Doohatty Glebe? Does anyone have any other suggestions? Any information about Andrew and William Gott in County Fermanagh would be greatly appreciated. (Andrew emigrated to the United States by 1852.)

  • In 1864, Griffith's Valuation of Fermanagh listed five heads of household named Gott.  While your ancestors may have left Ireland by then, it is possible, even likely, that they were related to one of these.

Source Surname First Name Townland Parish County
Griffith Gott John Derreens East Cleenish Co. Fermanagh
Griffith Gott John Teesnaghtan Kinawley Co. Fermanagh
Griffith Gott Sarah Contymullan Killesher Co. Fermanagh
Griffith Gott Thomas Derreens East Cleenish Co. Fermanagh
Griffith Gott Thomas Drumsillagh Cleenish Co. Fermanagh

  • Thank you, Patricia!

I had the death certificate for Andrew, but haven't been able to find any records for his parents.

The Griffith's Valuation is new to me though and a great help.  Thanks for the tip!
