Looking for marriage of John Grady and Jane Lally. Several children baptised at Ballinasloe between 1831 and 1845. I understand that they may have had to get married at the Church of Ireland church in Aughrim.

After searching for over 30 years I have only recently unravelled the origin of my surname (Gray was originally Grady) and my Irish heritage, so I am very inexperienced with Irish records.

Many thanks if anybody can help.

I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland. They have Ballinasloe RC records back to 1820 and also have Aughrim Church of Ireland marriages back to 1815. I did not locate a marriage record for John and Jane. Likely they married in an RC church that no longer has records back to the late 1820s or they were married in a C of I parish that does not have records on Roots Ireland or their records do not go back to the 1820s.

  • Nick,

I attach some records which may give you some clue to the family.

Roots records have the mother of Patrick and Elizabeth as "Johanne". The earlier records "Jane".

The only record I have found for a "Jane Lally" was in the parish of Kiltullagh which is East of Athenry.

Protestant marriages in Ireland are from 1845. State records are from January 1st 1864 for all religious persuasions.

  • Nick,

Please see attached copies of church records for the baptism of Patrick and Elizabeth Grady. Patriclk - centre of right hand page; Elizabeth - top of right hand page

The correct name for Jane Lally may have been Johanna?

The records include the baptismal sponsors which may be of assistance.

  • McCoy,

I hope I'm replying to these posts correctly.

Thank you for the Grady information. I have access to the Ballinasloe records via ancestry. I've also now taken out a subscription to roots.ireland.

The reference to John Grady being paid for Car Hire was interesting. He worked with horses when he came to Manchester - as a groom and a driver. In fact, there is a reference in the Ballinasloe court records of him appearing before the court for carrying on his normal business with a horse and cart on the Sabbath. Nice to have further corroboration of that.

I think Jane Lally might have been from Tuam, but I have no absolute proof of that. The sponsors' names at her children's baptisms suggest she had at least two sisters, Eliza and Ann.

    Thank you again.
