Bridget Mahon my great great grandmother may have been born in the parish of Kiltubbrid in the 1840s. Her fathers name may have been Peter (marriage  record) or Oliver according to my deseased grandmother. I really am trying to fill in who Bridget's mother and father were and where she was born and if she had any siblings. I found her marriage record on RootsIreland but couldn't find her mothers name anywhere. I would really appreciate any help that I could get as I'm a complete novice at this kind of research. Thank you. Sarelm

I believe your grandmother was correct that Bridget Mahon's father was Oliver not Peter and the 1868 marriage record you located is not correct. I found an 1878 civil death record for an Oliver Mahon from Rantoge townland. See seventh record at this link. The informant was Bridget Ward likely his daughter.

On the subscription site Roots Ireland, I found an February 1841 church marriage record for a Bridget Mahon to a James Ward in Kiltubbrid. Question for you? Was Bridget married to James Ward or John Ward?

See eighth record for 1890 death record for Bridget Mahon Ward

I did not find a death record for James Ward but I believe he died between 1890  and 1901.

    Let me know.

  • Thank you very much Roger for the information on Oliver/Peter name mix up.  The Peter thing threw me completely.  I'm fairly certain Bridget was married to a John Ward and they had alot of children most of them emigrated to the USA . My grandmothers  information was a bit sketchy and I'm not sure how reliable but she used to say that her own mother used to refer to him as "red John". I'm just throwing that in there it might be right and it could be wrong granny was very advanced in years  and I was a kid when she used to tell us what she knew but we were too young to be interested. The townland of Rantogue is definitely correct. I can't recall her ever mentioning who Bridget's mother was. Once again thank you so much Roger for all the information you have given me.

I'm still perplexed because the Bridget Mahon who married a John Ward in 1868 had a father named Peter. The Bridget Mahon who married James Ward in 1841 had a father Oliver. What year was Granny born and was she born in Ireland or America? What was the name of Granny's parent who was a Ward and do your know the year of birth.

  • I can't get my head round that at all. Granny was born  Mohill Co Leitrim and her father was Thomas Ward a son of my 2 x great grandmother Bridget Mahon and John Ward. Thomas  ( born about 1877) was married to Catherine McKeon daughter of Marie (Mary) Murry and Pat McKeon. Granny Kate was certain that John Ward was her grandfather.  In a phone conversation with a first cousin last night this was confirmed. I was also told that John was the son of Conor Ward who appears in the applotment books for 1833 as apparently does Oliver Mahon. She had no problem tracing back the Ward line but for the Mahon connection she just got Bridget, Oliver and Peter. I'm wondering  if perhaps Oliver was a common Christian name back then and that there was a few male Mahons with the name. The whole thing is so confusing I expect it would take a miracle to find out who Bridgets mother was. Thank you so much Roger for all your help.

The children of John Ward and Bridget Mahon were Patrick 1868 Catherine 1870 Mary 1870 Honor 1871 Cornelious 1872 Bridget 1873 Thomas 1876 Hugh 1878 Margaret 1880 John 1882 Annie 1887

Not able to find Bridget's baptismal record or any child of Peter Mahon. Kiltubbrid records start in 1847.
