Unfortunately, it will be difficult to find information without an exact place of origin. Most Irish record sources- church records, land records, census records- are based on specific locations. Until you know a specific location within Ireland, preferably a parish or placename, it may be difficult to do anything more with these records.

In addition McGowan was a popular name in Ireland during the 19th century so this does not help narrow down a place of origin:

There are a few places online you could try searching, however without more information it may be difficult to know whether any results found are relevant to your family:

www.familysearch.org have a huge databse of genealogical records including some church records for Ireland

www.rootsireland.ie have a vast collection of church records available, however you have to pay to use this site.

http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/ this site will be useful if the family came from Dublin, Kerry, Carlow or Cork. Church records from these areas have been uploaded here free of charge. Please note that only parts of Cork have been covered so far.
