Hello,

I believe my gggrandfather was born in Monaghan about 1782, Bernard Greenan. He immigrated as a bachelor to Canada in the 1820s leaving behind his parents James Greenan and Bridget McGorman. I would like to be able to confirm that Bernard was from Monaghan (it might also be Cavan he's from) and any information about his parents would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards, Jill

  • Jill:

I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and the earliest Bernard Greenan baptismal record available was in 1830 in Co. Longford. Finding church records back to 1782 is very difficult.

You may want to consider DNA testing. Possibly you will have some matches with fourth cousins who may have information on the origins of the Greenans in Monaghan or Cavan.

  • Jill,

The attached records may be of some use to you in your search for Bernard Greenan.

I have searched for this name with negative results on Subscription sites  www.findmypast.ie and www.rootsireland.ie.

The marriage of James Greenan in Clogher, Co. Tyrone which is across the Northern Ireland border from County Monaghan in 1802 and the

the death of a Bernard Greenan in the same area in 1809 may give you some clues.

  • Jill,

Townland spellings:  1809 - Curritenty - 1827 - Coratanty - Griffith's Valuations - Corratanty. All in County Monaghan and possibly relate to the same area?

    Attached records for Tithe Applotments 1823 - 1837 for a Bernard Greenan - Turcher 1825 and a Pat Greenan - Coratanty 1827.

Th name James Greenan? in Turcher - 5 from the top of page. Maybe.

You may be correct in concentrating you search in County Monaghan.

    Regards,

  • Hi Jill,

I'm interested in your post and the researcher's replies/links which I will take a look at in the next little while.  My family research has James Greenan and Brigitte McGornan listed as my g-g-g-grandparents, too from Monaghan.

The son, Bernard Greenan, ended up in Rawdon, Quebec and married Alice Donnelly in St. Paul de Lavaltrie in 1829.  Do you have that info or an ancestry account?  My ancestry account is private at this time but there might be info there that I can share with you if you don't already have it.  If you want to contact me directly my email address is sangar@teksavvy.com
