Hello all!

This is my first post so bear with me.

I'm researching my Great, Great, Great Grandmother - Ellen Griffin (married name Gale once she got to Australia). Says she was born March 1837 in Co. Galway, Ireland. She travelled to Australia without any family in 1861.

She states her mother on her marriage certificate as "Bridget Mulligan" and her father as "Michael Grffin" who was said to be a shoemaker.

Someone way back a few years did some research on these two, as Mulligan (according to this gentleman) wasn't a common name from that area.

Ellen's baptism is noted in the Glinsk/ Kilbegnet parish records however no further investigation as to where they lived, sbilings, family etc has been done.

Where do I start?

I'm in Australia and while my research skills of our records are fairly on point, when it comes to Ireland and Scotland I'm back to the babies.

Any assitance or someone also looking at this family, it would be greatly appreciated for a point in the right direction.

Thank you!!

  • Hi Sarah!

Civil registration started in 1864 and before 1864, we rely on available church records. The RC parish for your family would be called Glinsk or Kibegnet or Creggs. Here is a link to the present day parish where the parish priest is in Creggs in Co. Roscommon.

Baptismal records for this parish start in September 1836   https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0553   I checked the subscription site Roots Ireland and did not find Ellen's baptismal record which leads me to believe she was actually born earlier than September 1836. It was not unusual for an immigrant to adjust their age to make them younger. ( You indicate her record was in the Glinsk records so can you share the record?)

I did locate baptismal records for two younger brothers. Thomas Griffin baptized February 11 1837 and Martin baptized October 24 1839. Both reocrds were in Glinsk parish with the parents you mention in your message. The address for both was shown as Kilbegnet and Dunamon which leads me to believe that they lived in the village.

I did not find a marriage record.

Let me know if you have any questions.

  • Sarah:

see last record on this link. It appears that Michael Griffin died in 1879. Note he was in the workhouse but it clearly shows he was a shoemaker.

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_retu… did not find a death record for Bridget.
