Hello.  I am an American Ryan who was always under the belief that her branch of the Ryans hailed from Tipperary.  But, I recently found the following information which corresponds (as to names) with the family bible that I was just shown:

William Henry Ryan

Baptism Date:

5 Jul 1863

Baptism Place:

Rahoon, Galway, Ireland

Diocese:

Galway

Father:

Patrick Ryan

Mother:

Margaret Griffin

 I discovered that Griffin is a common name in Rahoon parish.  I would like to discover whether Patrick Ryan is a local Rahoon man, or a Tipperary man who was living in Rahoon at the time of his first child's birth.  The family later emigrated to America and our my first Ryan ancestors to come to America.  I'd love to find the Catholic Church where William Henry was baptized and also find a marriage certificate for Patrick and Margaret.  I will be in IReland in August and not sure if I should still schedule some visit time in Tipp if I'm really a Galway girl :-).  thanks so much.     The earliest record online is for the baptism of Mary Anne Ryan in 1857.

    The Address New Road indicates the City was expanding and every possibility they may have not been from the area. Also none of the 4 sponsors appear to be family which would also indicate they were not local to the area.

    I note there are  private Ancestry trees which include details of both children. 

    Do you have any detail on their emigration?

  • Thank you Gerard--this is very insightful.  I also saw the birth of the earlier child and have not be able to trace that yet.  My records indicate that Margaret Griffin came to America in 1865.  

    Was it common for the Irish to move within the country, at that time.

    Generally the only movement were RIC / Police / Teachers.  A RIC / Police officer was not allowed serve within his home area or that of his spouse.

  • Shelia, I have a Ryan/Griffin family in Corning Steuben co NY I suspect the parish Limerick. John Griffin b- abt 1838 Ireland married 1854 Margaret Ryan b- 1845 Ire- 1897 Corning Steuben NY. John Griffin was brother of my 2nd gr grandmother Ellen (Griffin) Mason b- abt 1835 Ire- 1897 Tioga co PA  USA. I am still working on proof of their sibling relationship Ellen Griffin Mason & John Griffin.,s/p of Margaret Ryan.
