My great grandparents were James Hackett and Elizabeth Mateer.  They emigrated to the US and then Canada. I have  not been able to trace them back to a county in Ireland. any suggestions as to where those names were common in early 1800's? Appreciate suggestions!

  • Hi Gina,

Tithe Applotments 1823 - 1837 have records of land valuations in Ireland - www.nationalarchives.ie - Free site.

In 1828 there are 3 "Mateer", all in Co. Down in the Civil parish of Drumgooland, Poor Law Union of Banbridge. Their townland is Leitrim,

also spelled "Letrim". Their names are James (2) and John.

For "Hackett" you have c239 and they are spread throughout the Country, with the highest numbers in Counties Roscommon and Tipperary.

I will check for the two names and let you know if I find any possibilities.

  • Hi Gina,

Further to previous post, the problem with the name "Mateer" is that you have the surnames "Tier, McAteer, and Mateer" in Co. Down in the period 1790-1810. The religious denominations are Church of Ireland, Presbyterian and Roman Catholic. You will need to do some home study to try and identify the background of your family. In the same period there are 28 "James Hackett" . They are in various Counties and Roman Catholic.

    Hello McCoy,

Thank you for giving me a big help in digging out the Hacketts! I will indeed look at the Tithe records.
the Hacketts in Canada were Presbyterian / Methodist. Likely because of marriage into a Methodist family. Not Catholic, anyway.
I have very recently heard the Mateer name in our family. I hadn't heard the name previously. I had heard McTeer,

I shall get busy. Again, thank you,

    Gina
