Hello,

My Hamilton ancestors emigrated to New Brunswick from Kinculbrack in 1834 onboard the Leslie Gault. I have found George Hamilton and family in two Irish records;

a) Tithe Applotment Records in Cumber Upper Parish 1828 http://www.irishgenealogyhub.com/derry/tithe-applotments/cumber-upper-p…

b) 1831 Census Returns for the County of Londonderry [PRONI: MIC/5A/5-9B]

I am wondering if there are other suggestions or known records that would help to identify the family living in Ireland?

Many thanks for any help.

Kind Regards,

Mike

  • The 1831 census is on-line on the national library site:

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie

There were about 8 or 9 Hamilton households in the townland at that time. Most were Presbyterian but some were Church of Ireland.

Cumber Upper Church of Ireland has baptism, marriage & burial records from 1811 onwards. There’s a copy in PRONI in Belfast. Cumber Presbyterian church has baptisms from 1827 and marriages from 1834. There’s a copy in the Presbyterian Historical Society in Belfast. (Personal visits required to PRONI & the PBS to see their records).

Griffiths Valuation c 1860 has 6 Hamilton farms in Kinculbrack:

Plot 1 John with 14 acres
    Plot 2 William with 22
    Plot 3 Ralph with 24
    Plot 11 David with 13
Plot 12 William with 18 (possibly the same Wm as plot 2)
    Plot 14 Hugh with 67

These farms today are all close to the Glenshane Rd just east of Claudy.

6 Hamilton households in Kinculbrack in 1901, a mix of Presbyterian and Church of Ireland:

The are 4 Probate files on Hamilton from Kinculbrack on the PRONI wills site:

If you have access to an on-line newspaper subscription site such as British Newspapers, you should find a number of articles relating to the Hamilton families of Kinculbrack. Mostly farming news and items to do with pension applications. That sort of thing.
