I am related to a Robert Hanlon whose father is believe to be a William Hanlon from Kilkenny born 1793.  William was in the district of Urlingford, Parish was Graine.  Any information on the Hanlon family in Ireland would be helpful.  Robert relocated to New York City and married an Elizabeth Taylor from Canada of Irish decent and settled in the New York/New Jersey area of the USA.  He wa my GG Grandfather.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

You did not mention the religious denomination for the Hanlons. I did search the subscription site Roots Ireland for Co. Kilkenny and I located two records in 1839 for a Robert Hanlon with father William. One was Church of Ireland and the other was RC in Urlingford. Is the Urlingford record for your Robert?

  • Dear Roger:

To the best of my knowledge, I am presuming the Hanlon family was Catholic only because Robert's daughter, Mary Ruth Hanlon O'Neill (my Great Grandmother was Catholic as was my maternal Grandmother, Elizabeth Mary O'Neill Olsen) but people do change their preferences.  Although, the birthdate I have from my family was August 1, 1839 so that really correlates to the Baptism date of 18 Aug., 1839 of the Church of Ireland with parents being William and Elizabeth.  I was thinking that he was related to the Elizabeth Holmes and William Hanlon, which is also a posibility, so I am torn between the two.  Would they do both?  Maybe the father was Church of Ireland and the mother Roman Catholic?    I have no idea what they would do.

Thanks for the help.  Are you located in Ireland?

I think you are correct. I think one parent was Church of Ireland and the other RC. They baptized him first in the C of I church and then six weeks later in the RC church. Clomantagh and Urlingford civil parishes border. There was a C of I parish for every civil parish but the RC parishes were not as common and Catholics living in Clomantagh parish would attend Urlingford RC church.

I live in Maryland in the States.

  • Roger,

Thank you for your help.  I'm glad you agree with what I am guessing to be the real situation.  This is all new to me.  I am not familiar with how the parishes work, so your input

is appreciated.  Now to figure out the O'Neill  family!

I just moved to this area in Sept. after living in California all my life.  Settling in, I like Williamsburg a lot.  Lots

of history.  Did you visit Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown and Yorktown Museum?  Trying to find time to do

more research on the Irish side of the family, and finding I have lots of Revolutionary War relatives from Virginia

    I did not know about.
