Hello,  The Harns family is not my family. But I became interested in finding their Louth people for them. I incorrectly thought that it would be easily done because I have access to the Irish and Irish Catholic records available at Ancestrydotcom and I belong to two County Louth groups on Facebook. One includes DNA matching and is part of the the GEDmatch Project. I have a large post which I want to paste to summarize the research that others and I have done on the matter of the Harns family. I am not able to paste to this message. What should my next step be? Happily you accept uploads. So you can immediately read a summary of what the Harns knew of their family in 1881. Thanks in advance for you assistance,  Mary M. Quirk-Thompson

  • Hello again, My Word documents is not working. I tried using Google dox and seem to have an attachment contianing the Harns research.  The attachment with Wisconsin Harns history is placed at the top of my initial post in an area with a black background. I attached it here in case others also could not see it. Not finding Harns in Louth, I searched for the surname Hearns found in the 1850 New York census. It is close in spelling to Hearne a surname most often found in the south of Ireland. It was uncommon in 1800s Louth. Owen Hearns is in Louth in 1829 in the Tithe Applotment records in Greenmount, Kilsaran, Louth. In the 1901 census I find Hearns siblings Ptrk head, Jms and Bgt living in Greenmount. They must have all died before the 1911 census. There is an Armagh probate record for James making me think he was the last to die. He left 44 pounds to Thomas Carpenter farmer no location given. I have no idea if Thomas Carpenter was a relative. I am not shown the original record at Ancestry. I am able to see the free access 1901 census. At Ancestry I can read the original summaries for matters relating to charges in the local court. James testifies or is the complainant since he was a water balliff. In 1829 Tithe Applotments I found an Owen Hearne. Forward, Kilsaran, Louth. since both Owens in the Tithe Applotments are listed in Kilsaran are they possibly the same man given different last names and different townlands?  In 1911 I found Kilkenny born Mchl Geo Hearne whose children were born in England. MGH worked for the government and had to be new to the area. Glad to have the attachment so that now the admin and others can view the work already done on the Harns family. Regards, Mary

  • Hi Mary, it is me again, no great news, have looked at Roots and could not locate a baptism for an Owen Herns etc, there is also Ahern found in North Louth. I found some baptisms for similiar names around 1809 in Louth all to different parents and only one child each, 3 were in Dunleer parish, and one in Ardee, mothers were McGauran (variant of McGovern) Murphy; Mathews and Hoey, oddly there was a gentleman here a few years ago searching Hoey in Kilsaran, Dunleer is south of Kilsarnan, next parish sort of.

    Also I could not find a marriage for a Mary Campbell to suit circa 1844.

    Greenmount is south of Kilsaran on the townlands website. https://www.townlands.ie/louth/ardee/kilsaran/castlebellingham/greenmou…;

    Louth at the CLAHS site for Louth and a few Hearne mentions but none to suit. https://jbhall.clahs.ie/

    I looked on My Heritage for migration records and found none around 1844 for his return, oddly Hern appears to be a Norwegian name as a couple were returned as natives of Norway.

    I will continue to look and will also email you.

    Happy Hunting

  • Mary,  I had a look at Griffiths Valuation done in 1853/4 and there is one Catherine Hearne, land is "In Chancery", there and three Campbell families, one plot is an Ann Campbell, a John Campbell, both have a Lawrence Maguire as landlord. Also a Mary Campbell and landlord Mary Holland.

    Having them all living together in the one area is evidence that is the correct place.

  • Thanks so much Pat. I checked back to my post. I never got notification of your replies. I assume that I missed hitting a button asking for notifications? How do I rectify my mistake? I acknowledge reading both you posts. I will refer to the second one by saying that I understand that on Griffiths there are 1. a Catherine Hearnes renting land in the Chancery. 2.  three Campbell famiies are renting: Two have landlord Lawrence Maguire. The other has landlord, Mary Holland. You emphasized that having them all living together signifies that it is the correct place. I will think through all that is said in your first reply. I have paid for a year's access to My Heritage records but have wasted months not learning how to use it. Regards, Mary
