According to DNA results, I am related to Thomas G Harty (1860-1938) born in the United States.  His father was Augustine Harty (born about 1810 in County Waterford and died 1872 in Shullsburg, Wisconsin) and his mother was Johannah Byrne (Burns) born in 1820 Waterford, Waterford, Ireland and died in 1916 in Shullsburg, Lafayette, Wisconsin).  My 2g grandfather was John William Harty and I believe they may be brothers.  I have not been able to find a direct connection between the two.  I did find an Augustine Harty in Ballynagaulbeg on land own by Edward O'Dell.  Again I cannot tell if they are the same person and how we might be related.  Seeking some help.

  • In the 1870 US federal census, the Hardy family consisted of the following:

    Augustus Harty

    60
    Johana Harty 46
    James Harty 19
    John Harty 16
    Bridget Harty 12
    Thomas Harty 9
    William Harty 6

Note that Johana and Augustus had sons John and Thomas. I hope this helps.

  • Hi, thanks for the response.  I already have this information unfortunately.  John William Harty (abt 1816, County Cork, Ireland - ), my 3g grandfather and Augustine Harty (1800-1872) whom DNA says I am related to, I cannot find that connection.  I am assuming they are brothers or 1st cousins some how.  Augustine's parents were a John Harty and Mary Coffey.  My best guess for John W Harty is a John Harty and Ellen Coleman.  I was not sure if the Augustine I found in Griffith's was my Augustine or not.  Some how they are related, I am assuming since I know I am related to John W. and DNA says I am related to Augustine so the question is how?

  • I do not know if Mary Harty (2g grandmother) had any siblings.  She married Cornelius Brennan in 1853 in Davidson County, Tennessee.  They had 6 children.  Jeremiah; John; Mary Elizabeth; Anna; Katherine and Michael William.  If I follow the traditional way of naming of children, then Mary Elizabeth should have been Nellie Ryan's mother's name.  Anna should have been named after Cornelius's mother and Katherine after her mother.  All I have ever seen is her mother listed as Nellie E Ryan, Nellie could be a nickname but of what?  So the names don't match up that way, so truly have no idea of siblings for either grandparent.
