Hello

I am looking for Hayes relations from Limerick. My great-grandfather was James Hayes, son of James and Bridget (nee Nicholson or Nicholas) Hayes.  I believe that Bridget was probably "Biddy to Richard Nicholas and Mary Leonard baptised on 17 November 1815, sponsors Thomas Kemp and Nancy Leonard".  Research has found that James and Bridget Hayes were married in the parish of Murroe on 23 February 1841.  Their son William was baptised in that parish on 28 December 1841.  The next three children were baptised in the parish of Doon: Mary (1843), James (1845) and Thomas (1847).  I have no information of where the family lived after this.

Three of the children Mary, James (my great-grandfather) and Thomas all came to New Zealand.  Mary arrived in approx. 1863/64 and James and Thomas about 1874/75.  It is also possible that William came to NZ too & I am currently researching this. Mary married Philip Duffy in NZ in 1866 but died about a year after the birth of her 4th child.  Thomas died in NZ in 1878. James married Mary Flanagan in Dunedin, New Zealand, and they lived  & farmed at Tuapeka West, Otago, NZ.  Sadly Mary died some months after the birth of her 5th child.

Any information about Hayes relations in Ireland that might be connected with my great-grandfather would be much appreciated.

Thank you

  • Hello Roshaux

Many thanks for all of the information & advice for researching Hayes family in Limerick.  It takes a little while to understand what is required for County, Barony, Union & Parish as well as Townlands!  Yes, I had a look at the Mary Nicholas entry in the Griffiths Valuation for Doon but it is difficult to make a link to our Bridget Nicholas.  It is most unfortunate that records here in New Zealand (marriage certificates, death certificates) were not more specific - none of them have recorded exactly where our ancestors came from apart from broad descriptons such as Limerick or Westmeath!  However, I will search through the suggestions you have made & see what transpires.

It is great to have assistance.

    Regards & thanks, Catherine.

  • Hi,

I realise this is quite an old post but I believe Richard Nicholas is my 4th great-grandmothers brother. I've also seen him named as Rodger, as far as I can tell, he had 3 children with Mary Leonard - Mary b.1819. Margaret b. 1821 and Bridget b.1815. On Margarets birth cert their address is recorded as Glenstal, my 4th great grandmothers name is Hannah Nicholas, she married Andrew Birrane in the mid 1820s their daughter (my ggg grandmother) Hanora Birrane would be Bridget Nicholas/Hayes 1st cousin and Bridget Hayes appears as a witness for the baptism of Honoras (now Madden) son in 1858. I've just looked up your G grandfathers birth in 1845 and their address is Cooga. i hope this makes sense, I can't be much help with the Hayes side of your family but I do know that all of this side of my family were in the surrounding areas of Doon and Abington as far back as I can find. Glenstal, Cooga, Gannavane are some of the townlands I've come accross (I think the Nicholas side are originally from Abington) Interesting to know that some emmigrated to New Zealand, a lot didn't stray very far, my Grandmother was born and raised in Doon then moved 2 hours up the road to Galway 50 years ago :)

I don't know if this any help to you, but it's nice to make connections

    Roxanne.
