Searching for more information on the Thomas Hayes/ Mary Purcel(Purcell) Family. I have shown the children and their birthdates. I found these in Moycarkey church records on Ancestry. Some entries have Mary looking like Marg but I feel it is supposed to be Mary.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and the subscription site Find My Past but did not find the marriage record for Thomas and Mary. Based on the 1850 baptismal record for Edmund, the family was living in Garraun townland. There are a number of Garraun townlands in Co. Tipperary but I believe your ancestors were from the Garraun in Twomileborris civil parish. I did find a Thomas Hayes in the 1850 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Twomileborris civil parish.

    https://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/tipperary/twomileborris.htm

I checked the 1901 census for Garruan and saw one Hayes family. The head of household was a 40 year old Michael

Did your family emigrate from Ireland?

    Hi Roger,

Thank you so much for your reply. I am still new I guess to this family. I am researching the Hayes' that settled in the Gatineau Valley area of Quebec in the mid 1840s. I was fed most of my info from my moms cousin who had still resided in Quebec until his death in 2014 I believe. He always told me the Hayes' came from Clonakilty Co, Cork. I have not found any of them around Clonakilty. I have found one of the families in Goleen, West Schull parish,Co Cork. Only a partial of Mick Hayes/ Joanna Mullins and 3 of their 8 children. The 3rd, 6th,7th ones in line the 8th was born in Quebec in 1847. That brings me to Thomas Hayes/ Mary(Marie) Purcel(Purcell) family.  I do not know if this is part of my Hayes' or not. They seemed to come to Canada around the mid 1860s. Thomas and Mary are listed in some of the Quebec church records of their children that were married in Farrellton, Quebec. They are said to be from Montreal. the records were from the late 1860s & 1870s. Thomas & Mary end up dying and are buried in Lac Ste. Marie which is not that far from my Hayes in Farrellton & Venosta, Quebec. So they were  lumped in with my Hayes but their relation is a little sketchy. Now there were a lot of Irish from Tipperary that settled around Lac Ste. Marie so it makes sense if I have the right Irish records for Thomas & Marys family they would come from Tipperary too. Gaurran as you say. In their family I have not found some of the children in Canada including a Michael The 1901 Irish census that you provided has him being born around 1861. So he would have been around 8 if they left him there in the late 1860s. It also shows Michael had a sister Ellen living with him. Both those are possibilities as I have not found any records for them over in Quebec. I will attach a little lineup of the family as I have them recorded in my family tree. I still am not sure exactly where any of the Hayes' come from in Ireland. I am leaning County Cork area for the ones I feel reasonably certain of. Also I included a picture of a gravestone over in Quebec taht says Clonakilty on it but the Lawrence Hayes that I mentioned earlier as my moms cousin was the one that put the gravestone there. So I take it as family lore.

    Thank you again

The Clonakilty RC records go back to 1809-1811.  https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0033     The free site www.irishgenealogy.ie    (Church Records TAB has the records for the Diocese of Cork and Ross including Clonakilty. You should search for your Hayes connections.

  • Hello Mark,

Thomas Hayes & Mary Purcell were my Gg grandparents. Their son, Thomas, Jr. was my G grandfather. Although I believe Thos. Jr. came from Ireland to Montreal & on to the US, he went up to Lac Ste. Marie Quebec & married Mary Ann Skehan, & shortly thereafter, they emigrated to Brownhelm Township, Lorain County, OH, where they were listed in one of the US Censuses, I believe 1880. Shortly after the Census, they moved down to Washington County OH, where they raised their family, remained the rest of their lives & are buried in the New St. Mary's Cemetery in Marietta, OH.

Thomas, Jr. definitely had a brother, Michael, who lived in Lac Ste. Marie & corresponded with my mom/his niece, Genevieve Hayes. My mom always referred to him as "Uncle Mick" & he always signed his letters to her that way. (I had those letters for years after mom died. They were written during WWII, so quite interesting & very endearing. Unfortunately, they were lost the last time we moved in 2009.) My mom was the daughter of Charles James Hayes, one of the children of Thomas & Mary Ann

Thank you for posting the link to the Thomas Hayes Family jpg, as I was uncertain as to exactly where in Ireland that the Thomas who married Mary Purcell originated. Although one of my dad's grandfathers, Thomas Manion (who I was named for), came from County Cork, I was fairly sure my Great Aunt Florence Hayes (daughter of Thos. & Mary Ann) said mom's family came from Cork, too. But apparently, they moved to Tipperary, which I never knew before seeing this jpg!

Regarding the other jpg, Hayes Gravestone, I don't think I'm related to them through any direct line

I don't know how to do genealogical research & have developed some memory problems that would make it difficult to learn. But I set up a Family Search account years ago, my family tree keeps getting filled in by other people researching relatives & I want to know more about the ancestors of Thomas Hayes & Mary Purcell (who, by the way, I believe was related to an Irish family named Ryan). So I hope you, Robert & others will post more info, if you find any.

Thanks again to both you & Robert,

Hi Katie, Thanks for the reply, Do you have access to Ancestry.com. I have info on the Thomas Hayes/Mary Purcell family but I am not sure my line is related to them. Let me paste you a file on how I searched Ancestry with a partial image of the results. This will get you the families Thomas Hayes and Mary Purcell (Marg is also shown but I still believe it to be Mary). Also in these results will be the family of a Michael Hayes and Cath Purcell maybe they are related. There are other families that show up in these search results but I would contrate in maybe the first 14-15 files that are listed in that search

  • Hayes/Purcell/Ryan

    Hello Katie,
A bit late to the party, but I may have some answers for you.
Thomas Hayes and Mary Purcell were my 3xG Grandparents.  Their daughter Mary Ellen Hayes married my GG grandfather Mathew Mathias Ryan and lived in Ryanville, Quebec(Lac Ste. Marie).
Another interesting Ryan connection for you is that Mathew Ryan's sister Anne is Mary Anne Skehan's mother.  The father is Patrick Skehan.
Mathew and Anne Ryan's parents were James Ryan and Mary Gleeson.  I believe James Ryan and Mary  Gleeson's children were born in Tipperary (Balina/Roran).

Hope this msg finds you well
