Hello,

Due to the covid-19 virus I have postponed my trip to Ireland. I had planed on trying to find more information on one of my great great great grandparents. Her maiden name was Nancy Jeffreys. Her father was a presbyterian minister. She married Dr. George Lemons. I believe they had six children. She died in 1844. I would be ever so greatful with any info.

  • Nancy’s birth, marriage and death are all long before the start of statutory registration in Ireland. So you won’t find a birth certificate, marriage or death certificate for her. You will need to rely on church records where they exist, and many of those are not on-line.

If Nancy’s father was a Presbyterian Minister then the Presbyterian Historical Society in Belfast may be able to help you with details of his life and career. They keep records of all Ministers known to have served in Ireland. E-mail them and ask:

You have posted this under Keady. If that’s where Nancy was born and married then tradition was to marry in the bride’s church, after which she’d normally attend her husband’s. None of the Presbyterian churches in or near Keady has marriage records for the years you probably need. Keady 1st Presbyterian church has baptisms from 1838 and marriages from 1845. So there may be no record of her baptism or marriage.

Presbyterian churches generally don’t keep burial records, though if Nancy was the wife of a Doctor then she’s likely to have a gravestone.

What denomination was Dr George Lemons? If he was Church of Ireland and lived in Keady then their baptism marriage & burial records start in 1780 (with some gaps) and there’s a copy of those records in PRONI in Belfast. So you might find children’s baptisms and parents burials there.

  • Elwyn,

Thank you so much for the info. Dr. Lemons died on the voage over to America. Nancy was buried in Ireland. I just don't know exactly where. However with your information I may be able to get a good idea of where. I do believe Dr. Lemons was a part of the Church of Ireland. Are there any cemeteries in Keady? If so what are the names of the cemeteries? If you don't mind. Thanks again for your help.

  • John,

There’s a free list of graveyards (together with map co-ordinates), parish by parish, on this link. Search “graveyards in Ulster”:

There’s 8 in the parish of Keady though 3 are RC and can probably be excluded. 3 Presbyterian, 1 Church of Ireland and 1 mixed.
