I have been tracing my Barry Famly tree for some time, but have very few facts on which to base my searches.

My Great Grand Father Michael John Barry emigrated to England before 1885, as he married Mary Ann Louisa Broockway, in Portsea, Portsmouth, England on 4 Oct 1885.  On his marriage certificate his father is listed a Garrat Barry a Tailor, it does not state if he was living or not at this time, or where he was born or was living.

Michael J Barry was recorded in the 1891, 1901 and 1911 English census, on two occassions as Thomas M Barry, and the other time as Michael Barry, his wife and famil were listed correctly

I have currently a family from Belfast/Drogheda under investigation as they fit my time line estimations. They are Garrett Barry est. DOB 1839 +/- 5years who married Catherine Toner presumably of a similar age.  In 1857 they had a boy Michael who was Baptised 7 July 1857in Drogheda. In 1864 he had Garret, and 1868 Laurence both born in Belfast but registered as Berry. Laurence married in 1901 but Garrett so far does not appear in records so I suppect that he either  emigrated or died as a child, or was in the armed forces, I've commisioned a professional to help with this family.

As Garrett senior was a Tailor there may be records of a Tailors Guild or Trades Union in Belfast / Co Antrim or Co Louth or possibly he may have had his own business, could anyone suggest how to follow this up?

As I haven't found a marriage record for Garrett and Catherine in Drogheda or any suitable prospects in the 1901 or 1911 Irish census, or records of death in Ireland, it's possible they too could have emigrated after 1868.

I'd appreciate any help to follow up with anyone who has similar named individuals, in Ireland, UK or elsewhere, or knowledge of Tailors in Ireland around 1885.

Thank you Michael A Barry.

  • Michael,

Garret Barry is a very common name in parts of cork and limerick.  Have you looked at www.irishgenealogy.ie and www.rootsireland.ie

  • Hello Ann,

Yes I've an extensive list of Garret Barrys, from various sources, only a few fit the possible DOB, and I have 21 death certificates of the most likely candidates, none seem to fit the bill!  I thought at first that the unusual spelling was going to help, but so fas Garrat, and variants usually turn out to be mis spelling of Garrett.

Since I am so short of hard facts I've today decided to send for a DNA testing kit, so I hope that might at least give me some clues from which part of Ireland my family originates.

I've come across  a DNA mapping project with 23and me for all Ireland,  parish by parish using local people with a traceable pedigree. So I decided any extra clues would be required to help pin down my families area.

I'm begining to think that MIchael wasn't the only family member to emigrate so I'm keen to get involved here, I've been establishing links to Barry decendants who are from families who emigrated, I'll be adding my work on the Barrys of the 1901 & 1911 Irish census to my web site soon, for other to have access to.

I've had some success through the message boards on Ancestry so I thought it worth while to post something here, thank you for reponding. I notice there seems to be three copies so I'll see if its possible to reduce that to just one.

    Best regards

  • Hello,

The time lines for my family are as follows:

Michael John Barry was 27 when he married in 1885 so DOB 1858, one further complication MIchael was also known as Thomas, consistantly on birth certificates and in the English Census twice from three times.  I have based my searches on Michael as the correct name, but only time will tell if this proves to be correct.

Garrett Barry must have been over 21 and married, assuming Michael was the first born then this places his approx latest DOB as 1839, if MIchael was not the first born then this date slips back by potentially by up to10-15 years on the assumption they had a typical number of children.

I'm awaiting some results for the church marriage record and Birth/Baptism for MIchael from the family in Drogheda, and the DNA results could possibly help to locate an area in future.

I've found two entries in the 1881 English census for single solderiers at Adlershot, Hants from the 82 Regiment on foot which later in that year was incorporated into the South Lancashire regiment, one named Michael and the other Thomas of the correct age, Michael was recruited in LImerick and gives his birth place also as LImerick, unfortunately Thomas only stated Ireland.  As Portsmouth doesn't seem to be on the main migration destination places some thing must have brought MIchael to Hants so that he could meet his wife in Portsea, Portsmouth. Either the Army of chain migration following so other relative or sibling already there, perhaps the Naval dock yard where MIchael later worked was the reason, he could have gained some skills in the BElfast yeards before leaving.
