I am hoping someone may be able to help me with any information regarding my great grandfather John Buckley.

He was married in Ipswich, Queensland 3/5/1865 age 23 making his DOB about 1842 His father is listed as James Buckley and his mother Johanna Hinsh ( I think that is the spelling of her surname) and place of birth County of Limerick. On my grandfathers birth record (1876)  it states his father John was born Ballylanders Co. Limerick  and his age was 34 years which again makes his DOB about 1842. On John's Death Cert 31/5/1910 it states he was 70 years making DOB about 1840. It also states he was living in Queensland,Aust for 46 years possibly arriving about 1864.

I can't seem to find any birth record or shipping record of when he may have left Ireland.

Thank you in anticipation.

The subscription site Roots Ireland has Ballylanders baptismal records starting in 1842 and marriages starting in 1848. The Ballylanders parish register on the NLI site has baptismal records starting in 1849 and marriages in 1857. Likely Roots Ireland found some additional records.

I searched Roots Ireland for all Buckley baptismal records for Co. Limerick with father James and mother Johanna and did not see any good leads in Ballylanders or other parishes. If John was baptized in Ballylanders, it was likely before 1842 so no record would be available

The 1850 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Ballylanders civil parish shows nine Buckley records but no James Buckley. Five of the nine Buckleys lived in Curraghturk townland.  https://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/limerick/ballylanders.htm

Likely James Buckley was a labourer or possibly deceased by 1850.

Are you aware of any siblings to John?

There would be no shipping records from Ireland.

    Have you considered DNA testing?

  • Hi Roger,

Thanks for your reply. I don't have any information regarding siblings for John so it makes it hard to find anything. John is listed on all the records here in Australia as a labourer, so I could assume his father James was a labourer as well.

I haven't done my DNA so maybe that should be my next step to try and uncover something.

Thanks for your help, I will keep searching.
