Looking for Donahoo ancestry in County Cavan. I don't know anything more than the county. My great-great-great-grandfather was Michael Donahoo, d.o.b. before 1790(?), for his death date I have 1 April 1839 Ireland. I have Mary Coyle as his wife. I have 8 children listed for them. Ann, John, Mary, Ellen, Michael, Rose, Ann Bridget, Peter. I know most of these are accurate as they came to the U.S. and I have the names of their spouses.

I've been told they were from County Cavan, possibly Glangevlin. (I was told "Amgeslin," but I've found no location with that name. Glangevlin is the closest sounding name I could find. I would really like to know a bit more about their origins, family, etc. in Ireland.

  • Hello Lisa, I searched Roots Ireland for a birth circa 1790 and got no Michael Donohoo or similiar, There are some Donohoo or similar in a few different places, All except one are listed as Roman Catholics, they are mainly in Castletara; Kilmore (Cavan Town) and Kilikere, there are many variant spellings of the name and now a days none end with an O more likely Donoghue or similar, this is tricky as there are partial remains of the 1821 census for Cavan and at least you can see where the name si in Cavan, there are also lots of Coyles, you can search it here http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/ select search and then 1821 as it defaults to 1911, and Cavan as a county, you can see the varius areas they lived at least. One spelling but no Michael is Donohoe ; Donaugho ; Donoughe ; Donoho ; Donaho ; these are among the spellings I see on the census, under Coyle this is a popular parish Annagelliff  and wonder if it is the one you mention.

There was no requirement to register deaths prior to 1864 and I did see one in Mohill, Leitrim in 1839, this is a neighbouring county to Cavan but there is no way of establishing if this is the correct one.

Cavan is know as the lake county and is one of the counties that border Northern Ireland, you can see the various civil parishes and townlands here https://www.townlands.ie/

There are at least 3 Cavan Genealogy Facebook pages, apply to join.

    Good Luck
