Hello,

I would love some help finding my ancestor in the Tithes.  In 1833 my ancestor Patrick McCabe is married and has 3 children in the Catholic parish of Castletown-Kilpatrick (per baptisms). The 1833 Tithes only show three Patrick McCabes.  I can't figure out which one is mine because the townlands/civil parishes/Catholic parishes confuse me. Can anyone help me determine which Tithe record belongs to my family?

Thanks in advance.

  • Not everyone is listed on the Tithe Applotment records, as only certain types of agricultural land was eligible, there's no guarantee your Patrick would be included. People living in towns and those with occupations such as labourer would not usually be included.

In the 1830s the Catholic Parish of Castletown-Kilpatrick (aka Castletown-Kilpatrick, Fletcherstown) covered several civil parishes - Castletown, Clongill, Drakestown, Kilshine & Knock, so those would be the Tithe parishes to check.

EDIT : the NAI website seems to have mis-indexed the records for the civil parish of Castletown/Castletown-Kilpatrick Co. Meath - as far as I can see they are mixed in with the details for the parish of Castletowndelvin Co. Westmeath.
