Could anyone help with working out the name of this place in Tipperary? It was documented in 1841 and may have been copied down incorrectly from the spoken word.

See the file below. It is the place name on the 4th line headed .... A Native of ........ County Tipperary

I would be most grateful if anyone recognizes this place or a similar place in Tipperary

  • I found ship record on Ancestry, com. They transcribed town name Kilijman, Tipperary. I could not find on List of Townlands in Tipperary. RootsIreland has a COI baptismal record for Mary Ann Hipwell born 17 Nov. 1821, in Kilcremine (not on List of Townlands), Roscrea to George Hipwell, Esquire, and Catherine Howard.

  • Sorry a closer look at your document suggests Mary Ann's mother name was Mary, a widow.

  • Hi This name Kilcremine, I  have seen this in this post and only one other in another site.

MaryTV, you say this is in RootsIreland, was the original hand written document showing there?
I always look for that so I can see and make out the actual word.
Looking at the other query on this place name searching the actual family name it's in Rathurles which is in Kilruane.
    Rathurles Townland, Co. Tipperary (townlands.ie)

I looked in Landed  estates, no results for this as a place, estate or family name.
I think it is Kilylaughnane in Kilruane.
When you look at the list of townlands of County Tipperary there are two lists the wikipedia show this.......

    Killylaughnane   Upper Ormond Kilruane Nenagh

The actual tipperary.ie on shows this...................

    • Killylaughnane, Kilruane Civil Parish, Barony of Upper Ormond, Co. Tipperary 80 A, 0 R, 3 P

    Killylaughnane Townland, Co. Tipperary (townlands.ie)

  • Margot,

Unfortunately, the record was not handwritten. There was a Kilcremine, Roscrea, Offaly. According to the Townland website, Roscrea Civil Parish included parts of Offaly and Tipperary. Have you checked the Church of Ireland Parish Names? Since Mary Ann was travelling with a minister, the parish name might have been used. I tried to find the ship record for the Reverend, without luck. Relooking at the document, based on the other letters, could the first letter of the townland/parish be 'H'?

On Ancestry, there are over 200 trees with George Hipwell and Mary Ann Rawlins. Their family went from Ireland to Australia. One of their sons was born in Offaly. George died around 1860. I have not checked all the trees but found only one with Mary Ann Hipwell. Her father George died around 1840 and her mother Mary Ann Rawlins remarried. Mary Ann Hipwell came to Australia in 1841 and married John McGee in 1842. Is this your tree? On Ancestry, I found 1901 death record for Mary A. McGee, Wellington, NSW, parents George and Mary A.

    Regards- Mary

  • The record must have been hand written some where.  Ireland Roots records are typed from books.
I used that site for years, but always went to the Parish books to check and did find other details that are not in RI.
I do know there area Roscrea etc.
No, the information is not in my tree, I am no relation to Clarebear.
